A couple of website questions

Hi folks.

I have now registered two domain names with 123 reg.

The first one is my own name so that I can have a personal email address which I have already sorted out.

The second is for the name that I intend to use when I start as a mobile portrait tog.

The first question is do I have to use 123 reg for hosting as thats who I registered the domain through? I was hoping to look for the best deal on hosting for traffic and support and go with them.

Second question is will I be able to design my site completely offline using something like joomla for example? I would like to get used to the layout and design aspects before going live as this will be the view the world gets of me and my work.

Would it be an idea to set up a personal website with all sorts of images to get some practice first? Then use the business domain when I am ready (may be 18 months or so but wanted to register it anyway)

I am sure I will have loads of questions coming soon.

You can host it wherever you want, you just need to sort the DNS / ISPTAG settings out at 123reg

You can download WAMP - which lets you install SQL databases and run PHP scripts (whole sites) and serve pages locally on your machine network

Dont assume your chosen hosting package will have the exact same qualities as your local WAMP instal. i.e. What version of PHP installed, how it is set up etc.

I run wamp on a server in my office, this allows me to develop stuff ofline, and migrate it online when needed

It made no sense at all to begin with but a quick google search for WAMP and it is much clearer

I assume that I need to work out which version of PHP, SQL, etc my host is using and match them with the required versions in WAMP?

As said, you can host it with whoever. A decent way I find to test it all out is to create a subdomain on your hosting (when you get it) and use that as a 'live' playground. Once you are happy with everything, just move it over to the true domain.

The buying of the domains was easy, now comes the fun of finding a host and then building your site
