A different 5dmk2 or 7d thread..

I have a 5d mk 1 and a 30d.
I am doing a lot of pictures of primary school photography, and find I am using the 5d with a 24 - 70 and a flash, and have my 70-200 on the 30d, so can go from wide and close-in to face shots depending on what body I use.
I have always liked having both a crop and FF body as it enables me to go really wide or gain the extra length a crop sensor offers.
Now, I have been looking at a 5d mk 2, but am wondering about waiting till the new version comes out in a year or whenever, so am thinking that it might be worth trading in the 30d for a 7d - the idea of good high ISO and better focusing appeals as depth of field is pretty small when zoomed right in so any help in that would be good.
So anyone else done anything like this, and what are your feelings ?

I used a similar tactic at a festival with my 5DII and 20D. Lenses were a 70-200 f4 IS and 24-105 f4 IS.

For web use and publicity shots the 20D are still plenty good enough.
The problem with the 20D is having to use ISO 400 or less; it is a serious limitation which meant the 5DII got used exclusively in poorly lit venues.

The 5DII at 24mm is wide enough that I've never needed a wider lens; if I did then the 20D might still be of use in poor light as you can get away focussing and long exposure problems.
I did buy a 1.4xTC for use on the 5DII and the 70-200 so I could get in close and have similar framing to the 20D.

When the 5DII came out I was asked to conduct back to back tests comparing the 20D to the 5DII cropped to the same number of pixels; the field of view is almost identical.
At base ISO there is no real difference; viewed at 100% the 5dII was fractionally better on one of the tested lenses and no different on the other.
However - as soon as you go up from base ISO or start trying to pull detail out the highlights and shadows it's a different story - the 5dII wins big time.

Whatever your decision, it's the high ISO that's important rather than the sensor crop.
Given the age of the 5DII and the desirable 7D features, I think if I were in your shoes I'd go for the 7D.
 
That is certainly the way I am leaning at present - thanks for your input !
Another small factor is that it will be easier to afford the 7D right now...
 
upgrade the crop as your 5Dmk1 is still a very very good camera to have then when as you say the 5DIII comes out snap one up but if you are always wating for things to come out then you'll never get anywhere.
I'm currently waiting for a dishwasher that not only fills it self but then puts everything away i've heard rumours its coming out in the future :).

Interesting stuff indeed !
While my need for loads of frames-per-second is small, the one problem I do have with my 30d is that it would be nice to get more in focus pictures when shooting in very low light and at wide apertures - it seems that the 7d would be good at that, and maybe even better than the 5d - thus making any 5d mk3 worth the wait.. (and no, I do not want a dishwasher that will fill itself !)

I am not one of those who always wait for the next best thing, but it is looking like the 7d is the way to go until the new 5d appears - my 30d is not going to go up in value, it is my birthday soon, and hey, I am worth it, aren't I ?
