Happier now? Yes, probably, and definitely not a time to go back to even if you were more than just a normal working man.

Technology solves one set of problems then creates another.
Manual work made us much healthier, but that’s nulled by the lack of affordable health care.
Now we have healthcare that’ll keep us going but many people suffer long agonising deaths from dementia, none of us would really choose that.
If we were given an honest choice of a heart attack at 75 or 5 years of slow demise from 80, who’d choose dementia?
On a cheerier note
waterproof clothing means we can work and play in inclement weather. Looking at those images I was struck by how miserable it’d be to be out working in the fields in multiple layers of wool.
