Hi,
I have a canon 50D which is rated at 6fps. It might be a dumb question but why is this only ever achieved when the camera is set in manual. If I'm using TV I don't think it goes above 3-4FPS. I have the Tamron SP VC 70-300 lens which is quite fast - I thought.
I'm looking at the 7DII which is rated at 10FPS. Are these speeds only ever achievable when using manual ?

There are a few reasons you might not be getting the quoted FPS

1/ poor quality or slow memory card
2/ inability for the body/lens to achieve focus
3/ Increased data to transfer to the buffer/memory card ie: shooting Raw + jpeg
4/ poor light
5/ lens not up to the job............this is unlikely
 
Probably because in aperture priority for example the camera has to work out the shutter speed between shots but in manual you,ve already set aperture and shutter speed.

I get full FPS no matter what mode its set to on the 50d (shooting full raws).

I might be down to the lens focus speed rather than the body.

No this doesn't affect the FPS rate as long as the lens can actually achieve focus. The processor is rated to the speed given so that is taken into account.

As above, its more to do with the lens itself achieving the focus.

I see we are talking about the Tamron SP VC 70-300 combo. This is not a fast focusing lens so here lies the problem I'd imagine! Its also known for hunting for focus, this will certainly slow the fps as the shutter wont fire unless its in focus.

Hi, thanks for the replies. I just did a quick test and yes it is due to the focus. In TV mode but with AF turned off it goes at full speed. I should have thought about it, I thought the lens was faster than that. I'm hoping to get the 100-400L MKII soon, hope that's quicker at 6 times the price.
 
I have 7D and 60D and both work fine in man, av and tv and I only shoot RAW
