A good portrait lens for D100

My hubby is really into sport photography and has the lens for it, I`m getting into people/portrait photos can you recommend a good lens that will be good for a novice.
 
depending on your budget, but the samyang 85mm f1.4 seems to be a decent buy
 
Its manual focus only though, which may not be so good for a novice. The Nikon 85mm f/1.8 is not too expensive and has AF. Or a 50mm f/1.8.

The Samyang is a crackin buy though if you dont mind the manual focus part.
 
the nikon 85mm is a cracking lens just a bit more expensive than the samyang..
the manual focus could prove tricky though
 
Another vote for the 85mm f/1.8. I had the pre-AF-D (called an AF appropriately)version that I picked up for a fair bit cheaper than the AF-D version; same optics and evrything, just some difference in giving distance info to the camera that I never had a problem with both in the studio or outdoors. At first, 85mm can seem a bit excessive on a DX body but you quickly get used to it and the separation of subject against background is exceptional at wide apertures.

If you can't stretch to an 85mm, the next 'budget' choice is the 50mm f/1.8... really good lens for what it costs :)
