Okay my current primary shooting kit (not counting old bodies and lenses) consists of.

Canon 7D
Canon 70-200 f4 L
Canon 50mm f1.8

Now I also have a 75-300, a 90-300, and a 18-55 kit lens off my old 1000d. But I wont be using any of these, I just cant deal with their poor performance.

What should I get next? I know I need something wider than the 50mm, for this, Id like a zoom, Fixed aperture would be great, but not a necessity. I want something longer too, but I have no idea what yet. I intend to get the 1.4x extender for the 70-200, but Id still rather a longer lens to compliment this.

Any suggestions will be considered, Im at a loss for what to buy really. I do need the wider lenses, something I can use as a walkabout, more than the longer range though.

I mostly shoot conceptual, wildlife, travel, a lot of different things really. Anyway, let me know what you guys think I should be looking towards getting. Thanks.

I think a 17-40 mm f4 L would do a good job for you, great build quality and really sharp at f4 across all focal lengths.

also the 16-35 mm f2.8 L, too...and the 24-105 mm f4 IS L and the workhorse 24-70 f2.8L but getting a good copy of that lens is very hit and miss.

The 17-40L is a fantastic lens - absolutely amazing on my 5D MKII, sharp as a razor!

Most of my photography is done with my 24-70L though an fantastic lens, focal length will be slightly longer on your crop though.

Either way you won't go wrong.

Never owned a 24-105 - but heard good things about them, just not fast enough for my needs.

The thing with the 17-40 f4 L ... Its just a little cheaper than the 17-55 2.8 IS, which is a faster lens, and also has IS. Is the 17-40 that much sharper/IQ than the 17-55?

After I first used my 70-200 L I did say to myself "Luke, never buy anything other than L glass again" But looking at this decision... Its not as simple. Cant understand what the 17-40 has over the 17-55 other than the weather sealing/build quality. Is the sharpness that much better?

The 17-55 can't be an L lens, as it's EF-S, and only EF lenses can be Ls (think I've got that right).

Not really anything in it image quality wise, the only really big plus point of the 17-40 is it'll work on full frame, whereas the 17-55 won't! Apart from that the 17-55 beats it on speed, IS, and matches sharpness

Yep, after looking at sample images from both, I just cant see why I should go for the L over the 17-55, especially when i have no intention of going full frame for the next couple of years at least.

Another vote for the 17-55 :)

And chris321 is right, Canon won't ever badge an EF-S lens as an L for the simple (and logical) reason that they can't have "professional" L-series lenses which don't work on their "professional" 1-series bodies :)

Canon 17-55 2.8. No brainer ;) Great lens.

17-40L is brilliant on full frame, but really rather poor spec on a crop camera.
