I was recently lucky enough to pick up a Canon 70-200IS L lens. Before using this i was using the Canon 70-300 IS USM lens which obviously has a bit more zoom at the sacrafice of image quality and F stop. Now, i still have the use of this lens as i gave it to my wife to use but i was toying with the idea of either a 1.4 or 2x extender for the 70-200 but don't know much about them. I had thought about getting a 100-400L as well but for the amount of times i need a zoom that length it's probably a bit over kill and i can't really justify the expense.

So, how will the 70-200 with a 1.4 or 2x extender compare with the 70-300 in terms of image quality and F number i can use? How much better would a Canon 100-400 zoom be than using the 70-200 with a 2X extender?

It does seem a reasonably cheap way of getting extra reach out of my existing 70-200 ens but i don't want to spend the money if i'll be no better off than using my wifes 70-300 (which also benefits from being easier to lug around!!)

Hope that makes sense? I know what i mean in my head but sometimes have difficulty translating it to something meaningful to others!! lol

Your camera bag says you have the 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS, so I'll assume that's the one you're talking about here.

A 1.4x Extender will make it 100-280mm f/4. Image quality will probably be better than your 70-300, but not by as big a margin as without the Extender. And of couirse it's f/4 throughout rather than f/4.5-5.6.

A 2x Extender will make it 140-400mm f/5.6. However this will have a much bigger impact on image quality. It won't be as good as a 100-400, but I don't know how it will compare with the 70-300.

Thanks for the info and sorry for the lack of info on my part. Yes it's the F2.8 70-200L IS lens i have. I'm not sure what a TC is sorry but the extender i am talking about goes between the camera and the lens and increase the focal length by either 1.4 or 2x :)
