Hi Folks

I'm looking for a longer lens for wildlife use. I currently use a Canon 70-300IS but whilst following the rut on the hills this year it came up a little 'short'.
Any recommendations/reviews of your own kit would be useful please. The 100-400L is sadly a bit out of my price range. I've been looking at the Siggy 120-400?

Got a Sigma 150-500 OS which I bought as a replacement for the canon 70-300IS.Its a crackin lens for the money,sharper than the canon and quieter focusing.Only drawback is the weight! One for sale in the classifieds!

Unfortunately once you get past the variable aperture 70-300 zooms things get a bit pricier
Don't think a converter would be much use, would lose AF and aperture would go up a couple of stops

The Sigmas are an option, but heard good and bad about them,also rather weighty, after that its the 100-400 or the cheaper of the 400mm primes (which I opted for)
You could also try the 300mm f/4 IS with a 1.4 TC which may still AF, but not certain about that

Then its the heavyweight primes, both in size and how hard they hit your wallet
 
I believe the 120-400 is basically the same optically as the 150-500.

For what it's worth I have a 150-500 (Nikon fit) and whilst it is good value for what you get it isn't the ultimate in IQ by any sense of the word. The Image Stabilisation is a wonder though, I get decent shots handheld at 1/60s which at 500mm is astonishing!

Having said that, it's generally better to fill the frame (with the 500mm) than to crop down from a shorter (300mm) better lens.
 
Nothing wrong with the IQ on my Sigma, this was shot through double glazing!

Realistically Ken, that isn't sharp - through a window or not.

It looks pretty much the same as mine and whilst more than fine for printing, pixel peepers will be disappointed.

I've never understood the attraction of pixel peeping personally, is this better for you.

If you like the 150-500 and want something sharper open wide then look at the new Sigma 50-500mm OS

Or look for the best value telephoto ever. The Sigma 400mm f5.6 APO HSM TELEMACRO
Most of the samples only work open wide (f5.6) on new cameras BUT IT DOES NOT MATTER.
The exact model above is rated to be as sharp or sharper than the Canon 400mm f5.6 in Prodoto and costs 5 to 9 times less ...
