A "Macro Extension Tube Ring for Nikon" Question!

The answer to my question might well be obvious if you apply the "you get what you pay for" adage, but I'm going to ask anyway as I'm fairly new to this game, and trying to build up my set up on a lowish budget. Basically, would this be worth getting to improve the macro capability of my Sigma 70-300mm lens?

In my view they are rubbish, you will loose all contact with the camera,auto focus,aperture control,exposure.
you will have to spend around £90 to get AF and the rest with the likes of Kenko.

If you have the money though I would advise spending extra for the kenko- or not getting any 'tubes' and saving up for a proper 1:1 macro lens- the tamron 90mm is fantastic

I have the Kenko tubes... not worked out how to use them effectively with a 70-300 yet, but got some fairly good results with my 50mm bunged on the end of a 68mm stack.

Are they even as good as rubbish? I also don't like the set mrjames is using as the electrical contacts are bare inside the tubes and might cause flare. The Kenko set is the only true path although I would be cautious using more than one at a time with a relatively long, heavy lens like a 70-300mm.

Pretty much the same type of tubes that Cowaski sold me. You need a lens that has the aperture control on it and focus control. Away you go


As an experiment, to see whether investing 90 ukp on a lens and another 90 on tubes, a tenner isn't too bad. If you do like them you can always upgrade.

With the manual stuff, set to the widest (lowest) f number for focusing, then step it down to f8 or f11. Then wobble forwards n backwards until the bit you want is in focus. Hit and miss sometimes, especially with insects
