Our garden has suddenly become host to a number of Lampyris Noctiluca....glow worms.
The female is pictured here and the slightly raised white bits on the last three sections of the abdomen are the light emitting surfaces. The light is visible from about 30 metres away...quite an achievement for something only about 10mm in length (the emitting part is only 1-2mm across the three segments)
