Is it worth it....?

I know it will be going from 15MP to 8.2MP but is the resolution much better on the 1DIIN?

Bit of background - I shoot mainly motorsport, rallying in particular, but also go out and about with the other half on day trips, walking, camping etc so it will be a jack of all trades. Not too worried about the weight as always ran my 50D with a grip and my bag is horrendously heavy anyway.

Printing up to A3 is not uncommon but not very often - will the MkIIN cope with this size or is it only larger posters where it becomes an issue?

Overview - the AF system is a big draw for me with the MkIIN and all my lenses are now fast at 2.8 so can cope with some loss of the ISO.
What are the biggest benefits and drawbacks?

In my book ,pixel count is not the be all ,it's what the camera does with it that's important :)
 
each to their own but I shoot weddings with a 1d mkII. I did buy a 40d but sold it in preference to the 1D's

of course the mkIV's on it's way now though :-))))))))
 
For motorsports the 1D MkIIn smokes the 50D into the ground, autofocus performance miles better than the 50D, personally even ISO performance is better, even with the older sensor.

The camera has split recording, the camera can save the RAW file to one memory card and the JPEG/RAW to the other. (great for backup purposes), Pre-focused shutter lag is almost non-existent, fully weather sealed, ok only 8.2 mp but still manage to get A2 prints from full JPeg files, easily prints A3. Lots of autofocus points to choose from, haven't looked back since upgrading from a 20D (although still 2nd body).

Another advantage although you lose .3 crop as its only a 1.3 crop sensor is wide angle lenses for landscape etc are still very usable, so the 24-105mm f4 can be used with comfort.

So a backward step, NO WAY
 
Ive just gone from the 50 to a 2n and dont regret it one bit. Its heavier yes and misses a few things the 50 has, but its focusing and usability etc blow the 50 right out the water.

Defo not a step backwards at all.
 
Iv'e uses both and for what you want i'd recommend the mk2n, its autofocus is streets ahead its noise control is still great even for an older body, its 1.3 crop means that it is nicely situated between full frame and the 1.6 crop.....I had some great landscapes off of it. So i'd say mk2n all the way.....its not that the 50D is bad its just completely outclassed.
 
Reasonably regularly do A2 prints from a MkII so that shouldn't be an issue. Might be worth considering the fact that you'll lose "length" with the 1.3 crop though.

I've got a MK2N and a 5D2, if I had to sell one of them it'd be the 5D. The N, though heavy and clunky to use, just **never** misses.
 
One of the prints in my LRPS panel was taken on a 4 million pixel Powershot S40 and printed at A3.
It was a brilliant camera easily capable of A3 as long as I didn't crop too much in PP.
8 million pixels should be fine :)
 
Okay, so what are the differences between the 1DII and 1DIIN? I have tried the Digital Picture and DPReview but both have said minor but not gone into any details.

Not a great deal of difference, N version bigger screen, bigger buffer, problems sorted out with the dual cards.
 
Okay, I've managed to borrow one for a week or so, which I have the option of buying, so I'm going to give it a good going over - bit of motorsport, some landscape and a few days out with the OH.

Hopefully will be a good side by side review with the 50D.
