1. Try to use a stick more than a branch which has other bits sticking out of it, a plain stick....then you know exactly where its going to land and you can train your camera on that place alone.
2. Try have the stick sticking out on the same plane as your camera...then if you have to have a narrow dof because you are using a faster shutterspeed the bird will be all in focus (as much as possible).
