The driver was fine, it's quite common for these type of dragster to have spontaneous fires, such is the level of performance they are generating (8000hp, 0-100mph in 0.8s).. The driver is protected from the engine "bay" by a titanium blast shield..
I have another photo somewhere of a similar fire, although this is due to a fuel line breaking, you can actually see the fire running around the rear tyres..
I'll dig out a further dragster selection later if you're interested..

0-150mph = 5.0secs
0-189mph = 7.6secs
standing 1/4 = 7.68 @189mph so far.......
top speed = 200mph+ or how long i could keep the bodywork from flying off,whichever was faster...
Street Eliminator ET and speed record holder 7.87 @ 188.53mph so far....
World pump gas ET and speed record holder.7.68 @189mph so far.....
