A small caveat with the 500D....

Just received my 500D and Canon 17-55mm lens :D Big thumbs up for Onestop-Digital on delivery and pricing.

Anyhow, I thought I would put this out there for all potential 500D buyers that the RAW files (*.CR2) are not compatible with Photoshop CS3 or Camera Raw 4.6 (or less). It may be that this is common knowledge, apologies if this is the case, but I did not come across this info before I purchased and now it's proving a royal pain in the posterior.

A final thought, after spending close to £700 on the Canon lens I was quite suprised at how plasticy it feels, or am I just getting L-envy? Dear god this is an expensive game... :'(
 
I've heard of this before - I think the solutions involved using the Adobe DNG convertor first then opening the new DNG format raw files, or using Canon's raw programme and outputting as a tiff file.

Or I think the beta for Lightroom 3 (free download) will handle them so maybe use that as a first stage?



I'm interested in your comment about the lens - that's the f2.8 IS version? It's on my wish list... is it really that bad?
 
I've done some reading around online and it seems like there is no simple answer to the RAW compatibility question :thinking: I'll keep searching!

It is the f2.8 IS lens. I'm not sure what I was expecting, I know I didn't purchase a piece of L glass, it just doesn't feel like it's built as solidly as I expected! That being said the images are beautifully sharp and the AF is on a whole new level compared to my old Sigma 17-70.

I don't want to give a bad impression of the lens as it's only my interpretation, the only thing I could suggest is having a play with it at Jessops to see if it should still be on your wishlist :D
 
If I remember correctly, the latest version (at the time) of Adobe Raw solved the probelm with CS3 for me when I used it.

My bad: Camera Raw 5 and later is not compatible with Photoshop CS3.

I'm sure that there was a version of Adobe Camera Raw that allowed me to open .CR2 files from my 450D.
 
Make sure if you use the DNG convertor you either embed your original raw files or keep a seperate backup of them.

Cheers - it's the Sigma 17-70 that I'm upgrading from too! :lol:
 
I have the 17-55 2.8 and while it's not quite L build quality (few lenses are) it's well up to normal/high consumer standards and I wouldn't describe it as plasticky. And it is also very sharp, as you say.

I use the free Canon DPP Raw software, as a lot of people do. It also has useful tricks like custom corrections for vignetting, distortion and CA. Then import as TIFF to Photoshop.
 
Hoppy, perhaps it sounded a little harsh in calling it plasticky. I started out with the 400D kit lens so I should know what plasticky is!

Well I've had a proper play around with it over the last few days and can say it's certainly living up to expectations as far as the autofocus and sharpness are concerned :)
 
I have the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and it is tack sharp.I also have the 24-70mm f/2.8 L. It is built like a brick in comparission to the 17-55...;)
 
Well here's the scenario so far...

Bought new Canon 500D... who's raw files are incompatible with Camera Raw 4.6.

So, installed Camera Raw update... which says it's not compatible with Photoshop CS3.

So, a few days later I've got hold of Photoshop CS4... which is now saying it's incompatible with Vista service pack <1.

So, downloaded multiple updates for my laptop... which is now not updating to service pack 1.

So, four days later and I'm going ****ing mental... All I want is to look at my raw files. Anyone offer any words of advice/wisdom??
 
Move to a Mac?
 
Haha, brilliant. I think this situation is the very reason why macs are so popular! I would consider it if it didn't cost an absolute fortune to buy one.
I think I may have sorted the problem anyhow, although I shouldn't speak too soon.
 
It's not the way I want to work! :) I want to have working software that doesn't require faff every time I want to upload a batch of pics.

It seems silly to have a [relatively] expensive camera and software and still have to fudge/convert the raw files just to be able to look at them. I think I'm just a little anal about my workflow.

Anyhow, I've managed to sort it (I think!). I've installed service pack 1 and as a result could install CS4.

Awesome, glad it worked out in the end - sounds like a nightmare!
