Hi Ian, generally I use a 300mm F4 lens on a full frame body, so with a cropped sensor you'd only need probably 200mm (Depending on which location you choose). The common fault with taking shots like this is that there's a tendency to zoom in and miss the aircraft altogether as they're approaching and travelling at a such a speed, I was guilty of that when I used my 100-400mm!
