Folks,

I have been using photobox for printing for the last few months, but am printing quite a chunk of A4 files (5-8 a month) which costs about £12-£20, if I am going to do this, it feels like I should probably invest in a decent printer.

I had a quick look round but can't find anything up to date from a group test perspective.

I guess my questions come down to:-

1) Will a ~£200 printer match the quality of a pro printer like Photobox?
2) Anybody know what the price per print of this type of printer is?
3) Anybody seen any group tests?
4) Sensible places to look for advice ?

Anybody got any advice ?

Well if you're spending £20 for 8 A4s from Photobox then I guess you haven't heard that you can get 8 12x8s for £2.72 + about £1.70 post from Aldi. That's 0.34p each and they're good. I've had something like 400 done so far. Apart from the occasional one which comes back a bit undersize for some reason, never a problem. Quality has been excellent and a good match for my screen, or better.

For the past 3 or 4 years or so I've had many hundreds of 6x4s done by Photobox at 5p each and the above-mentioned 12x8s at 34p each from Aldi and I'm thoroughly satisfied. You can't get anywhere near these prices printing at home, let alone the reliability and lack of hassle.

Earlier this year, after seeing my Canon photo printer sat unused on my desk for nearly 3 years, I cleaned and flushed the heads with solvent and stuck it in the spare room wardrobe. I replaced it with a cheap colour laser for everday plain paper printing. If I want a quick one off photo I have a small Canon dye-sub that does excellent 6x4s.
