The town is located in Turkey, not far from the touristy part of Fethiye (near where I was staying). It was totally abandoned between 1915-1922 following the Greco-Turkish war, and the buldings sustained heavy damage during a 1957 earthquake.
It cost something silly like £1 to get access to the entire area and hill with the view,, with vast swathes of the ruins accessible for free. We saw perhaps 10 other people over the 4 or so hours we were there, with the local traders really struggling for business (we were off peak season).
For the readers amongst you, this place is meant to be the inspiration behind the Louis de Bernières novel 'Birds without wings'.
