About me pages

Did anyone else find it really hard to write the about me page for your website?

Really struggling and this is all I've come up with:

I started out as a child mimicking my Dad who has always been really into his photography.

I had a Kodak Disc 4000 camera, then I moved on to a Kodak ektra 100

I had various other normal film cameras between then and meeting my husband who had an APS camera which we took on honeymoon but soon after that, I got a Canon Powershot which was the start of my digital era. I then gained weekend custody of a Dynax 5d (which I had pretty much most of the time from my Dad) and that's when I got a bit more serious before getting my 40D.

After upgrading lenses and lots of learning, I have finally been proud enough of my photography to start up a website

I think perhaps there is an angle on "about me" that your perhaps overlooking, whilst what you have put is fine and valid, "about me" gives you an extra page predominently of text to fill in those all important keywords on a good regular basis to assist in promoting your site on search engines. (assuming of course its a commercial site anyway).

Thanks for your advice and taken on board. I think at the moment, I'm just looking at a portfolio site as I'm not professional or commercial. I do the odd photo thing here and there but at the moment just host on flickr and wanted something just a little better iyswim

The information you have given seems very orientated to those who know about photography and not the public who may only know that cameras take pictures. I would prefer more about your drive and passion rather than a list of cameras. If an admirer of your work or a potential customer wants to know the person behind the camera its a good place to include this.

Here's what I put on my site. Ptobably not the best ever written for "about me" pages but will give you a different slant. As Lee says, it's not all about equipment. Anyone can own a camera these days.

Hi there and welcome to my website.

I have been indulging in photography for over 7 years now.
My passion first took off when I acquired my first SLR and fell in love with being able to take full control of what I was shooting.

In the last 2 years I have moved from film to digital, this has given me the ability to further advance my skills/technique and allow me to have full control of the whole process, from setting the scene and pressing the shutter to creating that final print.

Photography is an art form that captures a brief moment in time and turns it into a still image for life.
I take great pride in capturing that moment and making it memorable forever.

Living in Edinburgh, there is always a plethora of subjects that can be photographed and more often than not I can be found out and about looking for that next great capture.

Personally, the 'about' text in the opening post is the kind of thing that appears on each and every portfolio website - kind of irrelevant, slightly rambling and rather forgettable.

I think a strong client portfolio says more about you than some auto-biographical text ever could.

If I were you I'd concentrate on things that'll catch and hold peoples attention....

Never write anything on your site to which the response could be "so what?". About me's rarely avoid this.
