Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop CS/Elements Compatibility

There are questions every so often about people trying out RAW editing for the first time with Photoshop/Elements, but finding problems when either they haven't installed or updated the Adobe Camera Raw plugin, or when they have, find that their computer still doesn't recognise the RAW file from their camera. In the latter case, the version of Photoshop CS or Photoshop Elements, and the version of ACR available may not be new enough to include their camera. Adobe update ACR as new cameras are brought out but will eventually stop new versions of ACR from working with older versions on Photoshop CS* and Elements*.

There is a way of making any camera's RAW files compatible with a version of ACR you may have, and that is to convert your RAW files to DNG files using the Adobe DNG Converter software. This will only allow your RAW file to be able to be edited with the older version of ACR you may have, but which may not have the newest features of a later version of ACR.

The Adobe Camera Raw plugin, and DNG Converter can also be downloaded from the same links, here for PC and here for Mac. Make sure that you download the latest version of ACR compatible with your version of Photoshop CS and/or Photoshop Elements.

For the latest versions of Photoshop Elements there are separate download pages for the version of Elements you have, which can found on the Adobe site. You can normally use the update option in the Help menu of the program to update which is the easiest option.

Below is only a rough guide to Adobe Camera Raw and the compatible versions of Photoshop CS and Photoshop Elements. There are slight version differences between Mac and Windows versions of Adobe Camera Raw, Photoshop CS and Photoshop Elements. There are 'Read Me' files for every version of ACR and the DNG Converter which goes into more detail on each version.

Feel free to point out any errors.

Adobe Camera Raw 2.4 and previous version are compatible with Photoshop CS

This thread was exactly what I was looking for! I've had trouble with my Photoshop recognising RAW photographs
from my Canon 5D MKII & I've just downloaded the Camera Raw 5.2 update. Hopefully I'll have no more troubles?
Cheers.

Thanks for this very comprehensive list. I had a Sony alpha 350 and Adobe CS4. I upgraded my camera to a Sony SLT55 and now CS4 raw cannot read the raw files. I don't wish to upgrade to CS5, does any program exist which converts my Sony ARW files from the SLT55 to DNG so that I can still use CS4? My understanding of your note is that the Adobe software cannot do this.:help: I have I got it right?
Thanks in advance
Dave

you know, there wa a time when I thought I was good at this software stuff, but now....
I understood from your list that I wouldn't be able to use all the improvements of the latest raw editing program, but thought I would be able to just convert my ARW to DNG and then use the older raw editing program which came with my CS4.
But I downloaded the latest raw converter ran it and it couldn't see any of my ARW files from my SLT55V. Are you sure I should be able to do that? Otherwise I might have to admit defeat and buy the latest version of Elements or worse still upgrade to CS5 to get a raw editing program for the camera I now have.

Dave

According to this page your camera is one of the cameras whose files can be converted.

I've never used the DNG Converter so can't help you with specific problems. Maybe asking in a new thread for anyone who uses the program for help may get you sorted rather than spending money too soon.

There are other RAW conversion programs though, some of them free. Whether they support your camera, you would have to check. There is a list of programs in the other sticky thread at the top of this page.

If you want to stay with Adobe, then the ACR with Elements is not (as far as I know) as well specified as the version with CS5. If you want the full options of ACR but have Photoshop already, then LightRoom may be the cheaper option. Of course there may be other benefits to CS5 compared to the version of Photoshop you may have already.

Be aware that both CS5 and LightRoom are due upgrades soon. The RAW conversion interface is getting a re-design in both programs. How much will be improved in the actual conversion process we'll have to wait and see.

Well you were quite right. All I needed to do was to read your note properly. :rules: I downloaded DNG converter 6.2 which is the version which mentions my Sony SLT55V. and it saw the Sony Raw files and converted them to DNG and then I could read the DNG on my version of Photoshop (CS4). Obviously I don't care that these won't work on CS5 as I'm not intending to upgrade. So thanks very much for the post. It has been a great help and now I can edit my files in raw with a bit more power than the Raw editor which came with the camera.

:bang:Hi I have PS CS2 and have installed the latest plug-ins for camera raw which works with my D200 NEF files. Trouble is I cant se them with Adobe bridge which i use as a image filer catalogue.

Any ideas

thanks

Have you installed the Camera Raw 3.7 update? ACR 3.7 is the last version compatible with CS2.

If you did, and the thumbnails still don't show up, how did you update?

Did you follow the instructions in the link above?

To install with Adobe Creative Suite 2 or Photoshop CS2:

1. Exit Photoshop CS2.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Double-click Local Disk (C: ).
4. Navigate to: (Please read directory carefully)

Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS2/File Formats

5. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, from the download into the same folder as Step 4.
7. Launch Photoshop CS2 or Adobe Bridge.

Sorry I know I am dense but can I ask if anyone could post me a link for Elements 6.0 so can convert the ARW files on my Sony A230 to RAW so PSE 6 can open it...........I am loosing the will to live trying to do it myself.

The ARW files are already RAW files, I assume that you mean to convert your Sony files to DNG files.

Follow the links below for either PC or MAC, depending on what you have, and download the latest DNG Converter, which at this time is Adobe DNG Converter 7.1.

The ARW files are already RAW files, I assume that you mean to convert your Sony files to DNG files.

Follow the links below for either PC or MAC, depending on what you have, and download the latest DNG Converter, which at this time is Adobe DNG Converter 7.1.

The DNG Converter can also be downloaded from these links, here for PC and here for Mac.

many thanks!

I've just treated myself to a new Nikon D600 and unsurprisingly there's no conversion for it in PSE9 yet. More worryingly there's a suggestion that there might not be ever, with Adobe only providing support for NEF conversion via PS CS6. I'm going to contact Adobe to check, but meanwhile I've been gobsmacked that Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 does, which, being an old version, came free with my Computer - and it didn't need any updates.

How can this be?

Also noticed elsewhere in this thread reference to a DNG converter download from Adobe but, if I am right, I have to wait for this too to be updated.

Would appreciate all and any comments.

Hello outonalymm, sorry for the slow reply. Adobe stop updating ACR for previous versions of CS* and Elements * (where * is the version number) once the latest version has hit the shops. You are left with paying for an upgrade for whatever previous version of their software you have, or using their DNG Converter software which will covert your files from Nikon NEF files to DNG files, and will allow your new DNG files to be read by any version of ACR. You have to wait for a version of the DNG Converter to be compatible with your camera though to be able to covert your particular NEF files. For the D600, the latest version of the DNG Converter, v7.2, will convert the D600 files, but Adobe put in this note;

Please note that the support for Nikon D600 is preliminary and there is a minor risk that the appearance of your images may change when the final support for Nikon D600 is available in an upcoming release.

If it's your only option, then you may want to use it anyway.

I have a Konica Minolta 5D camera that uses the DIMAGE MASTER LITE and Kodak EasyShare software. I bought the camera used but with-out the CD-ROM software. My question is can I use my Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 and (or) my Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended version that I have installed on my Computer. I am using Windows Ultima.

From the list above, the Konica Minolta 5D RAW files were made compatible with the first update of the Adobe Camera Raw software, v3.1, many years ago, so any recent version of the software should have no problem. :)

The easiest way to know would have been to try it. ;)

Following on from the 1st post in this thread, which has grown too large, new updates will be posted here.

The latest DNG Converter, and versions of Camera Raw prior to 7.2 can also be downloaded from the same links, here for PC and here for Mac as above. The release notes for the various DNG converters will state which cameras are added in that release, and will correspond to the cameras added to the same version of Camera Raw, which are no longer listed from version 7.2 upwards as they are downloaded through software updates.

ACR 7.4 has been released. As from version 7.2 all updates to ACR have to be done via the update option in Photoshop CS6 whilst connected to the internet.

The Software updates seem to be a little confusing at the moment - I came across an 8.1on the net recently - but there was a note on the file or the website in question that not all the current features were enabled as they are only for the Cloud versions.

Installed ok though on my PC but cant find the link so anyone interested just google for it I suggest

Thanks for bringing it to peoples attention. :)

Adobe allowed the ACR v8.1 update to update the ACR in CS6 for new camera compatibility, but not have any of the new features of the ACR plugin. If it had been CS7 released, rather than the move to the Cloud subscription model way of 'selling' ;) their software, the 8.1 update would probably have not been compatible with the ACR in CS6.

It was a way of not upsetting the CS6 users even more, as a lot were not happy that they would be forced to go to the Cloud (subscription) version if they wished to upgrade in the future. Not sure if updates for camera compatibility with continue with future ACR updates.

As far as I can understand  my CS2 cannot be upgraded for my D3100. I either have to upgrade my PS or buy Elements. Am I right on this? :help:

With many thanks from an old and doddery one!

You can keep using the software you already have/use by converting your D3100 files to to DNG files, using the DNG Converter software. This will make the files readable/editable with the software you have. There have been many updates to the Adobe Camera Raw software though since CS2, and you would be missing out on a lot of editing options.

The Camera Raw included in Elements is a cut down version of that included in Photoshop CS6 or CC, but may be on a par and/or better than that in CS2 for many thing, not least Noise Reduction.

If you don't use much of the features in Photoshop, and mainly use the Camera Raw plugin, Lightroom may be a better option, and you would still have CS2 for pixel edting. The latest Element would be roughly on a par with CS2 imho, but similar tools would work better, and will have features CS2 doesn't have. The biggest of which would be any Content Aware options and the Quick Selection tool amongst others.

Only you will know which option would suit you best. :)

And of course you have the option to move away from Adobe to something else. ;)

Many thanks for your comprehensive reply, Redhed17. :ty: I have one more very basic Q, but I'll PM you when I get a minute, if I may.

So my copy of Elements 2021 worked great with my Fuji Xt-30, with no RAW issues. I just got the XT30 II and now Elements says it won't work with my file. Tried to update, but the update menu is greyed out. Tried a manual install of RAW and not interested. Tried the v13 RAW and is there for use but same not readable message. WTF? XT30 II is not that new. Surely the file type can't be so different it's now unusable. Any thoughts. Have even tried the desperate laptop reboot :headbang:

I think it depends when Adobe added the XT30 II profile to their Camera Raw database. If it were 2022, then you have the 2021 version of Elements, which I'm assuming, that unless you are on their subscription model, updates are only for the year of the product name, in your case 2021. Only way to be sure is to ask Adobe directly.

There used to be a way to download the Camera Raw update, copy the file once unzipped, and replace the files in the program folder, but I doubt that is still possible as it was many years ago.

If Adobe say that your version of Elements is not updatable for the latest profiles, then you have a couple of options;

Pay to upgrade to Elements 2022. Hopefully that is nowhere near paying the full price again.

Convert all the XT30 II RAW files to DNG files using the (free) Adobe DNG Converter. Make sure you get the latest version so as to include your camera, and the DNG files will be able to be opened by any RAW processing program, including your Elements 2021.

Use a different paid or free RAW processer that can open the files from the XT30 II.

No just to add, and I am not 100% sure of this, but when RAW file is converted to a DNG file, the model specific profile Adobe has created for your camera, and in most cases lens profile too, may not be applied by Camera Raw, because the program does not see the file as from that camera/lens any more. You may be able to do that manually though. Again, not 100% sure of that, so you may want to test it if going down the DNG Converter route. Costs nothing to try. ;)
