hello all
just a quick question.
i currently have Photoshop CS3 would i gain anything from buying adobe lightroom v2 to complement my software library?

I would say Lightroom is for those who dont possess the editing skills needed for Photoshop.
If you use layers, dont bother with LR.
LR has a load of sliders that makes editing easier for non-artists like myself. I woudl love to get good a PS, but dont have the time nor the inclination as LR does a good enough job for me.

I think the PS and LR compliment each other well. LR2 is a brilliant programme for organising and finding your images providing you are methodical about keywording as you import, for instance if you wanted a picture of a yellow flower that blooms in summer instead of working your way though all your folders you could just search for "yellow flower summer" and pick out all the results from the catalogue. You can also search by camera, lens and other options you select.

You can also do basic editing, it is not quite layering but comes close with some of the options.

Why not download a trial version for a month and see how you get on. I would also work your way though as many of the online tutorials as possible as well to get the most out of it.

Download the 30 day trial from Adobe and see how you get on with it. There are also loads of threads with people saying which they prefer and why.

thanks for the comments.
on reading the spiel on adobe website it seems you can do lots of things like rename files and sort them which is where i am lacking. also i may look at very small event photography jobs so reading other threads it seems you can use lightroom to help show and print off pictures?

might have to invest then.

cheers guys and girls. ** comments also very helpful

Since version 2 of Lightroom, I hardly touch photoshop anymore. Not to say that photoshop doesn't still have its place when required, but I just prefer the whole Lightroom experience.

As others suggest download the trial, but make sure you persevere and give it a proper go. It will seem a bit bewildering at first as it's very different, but stick with it.

P.S. I even run my website entirely with Lightroom 2, using a free plug in called 'Lightroom Galleries'.

Lightroom 2 is a lot more than a basic editing programme! Apart from cataloging your pictures it will probably do 90% of your photo editing too. If you need to spend hours on every pic in photoshop then there is something far wrong with your shooting technique. PS works well and seemlessly with LR for the few times you need to do more.

Or your models skin, hair, clothes, MUA's work, the brief's changed, someone wants a colour tweaking, you're working on a montage, colours need correcting, something needs removing, something needs adding, you're doing chromakey work, and so the list goes on.

Photoshop is not just used to "fix" images, it's often used to create them and enhance really good ones as well.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ agreed! But you tend not to use it opn every image - or at least I don't - depends what you shoot I suppose!
