Hi all at the moment i have a Nikon 70-300VR lens but i am thinking of selling it and getting the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 lens. Is this a wise move?.

What im thinking is that i will be losing 100mm from my lens but i hear the Sigma is real sharp so does this mean on what i lose i will be able to crop and get just as sharp a shot(if not sharper) with the sigma?

If i get a few saying sell the Nikon whats will it be worth, its only an few months old and bought from Jessops.

Thanks, kev...

Ooo That's a dilemma. I don't have the expertise to comment technically. However I live in Glasgow a might be interested in buying your 70-300 depending on price. Although I two am tempted buy these f2.8 lens. However I feel I am not worthy of owning such a thing!

If you want you could P/X with my sigma 70-300 and that way you would have a lens lens the can still get to 300mm?

Cheers
Stuart

Absolutely not. If you are unhappy with the quality from your 70-300 VR then I respectfully suggest you are not using it correctly ;) Either way, cropping is not the way forward. You might have a go using a good 1.4x telecon on the Sigma, but I doubt that will beat the Nikkor either.

What's the problem anyway?

the 70-200mm F/2.8 will be a huge improvement IMHO. I've had mine (the Non-DG version) for years and I love it. The F/2.8 allows you to fit 2x Teleconverter and shoot at 400mm F/5.6. Mine is very good at 2.8, but I hear the new one's aren't as good. Best bet will be to look for a 2nd hand one on ebay so you can see some photos.

I was out with a friend the other day who was shooting with a Sigma 50-150f2.8 and i was using the Nikon, anyway we done a wee test just to compare shots and when we got back and downloaded his lens has dropped the background out far better than mine and i was at f5.6 the best i could get in the conditions which leads me to the next thing.

He was still shooting when the light was going i was having major trouble even though the VR was on and the shots looked ok when we got back my shots where not as sharp as his.

I do love the Nikon lens but this has ticked me off somewhat and the main reason i dont want to get shot of it is i was wanting to try some motorsport this year and thought the 300mm would be best hear(or am i wrong again?).

That's not a like for like comparison GG! Of course the Sigma was better - 50-150 2.8 is quality fast glass, not a long range f/4-5.6 consumer zoom. But I think you'll find that the Sigma is not very good at 300mm ;)

Try and find an 80-200 Nikon AF-D instead of buying the Sigma, then you'll notice a huge difference in IQ. I couldn't believe the difference on my D80 between the 70-300 VR and the 80-200 when I swapped over.

Well thats the thing i would'nt say there was much cropped off the 150mm compared to my 300mm is that not a tad strange.

Not sure I understand what you're saying, but if it is that a 150mm image cropped to the same field of view, is better than your 300mm shot, then summat is wrong. I think I would refer to post #3 ;)

Ok i'll try and explain, The two of us in the same position took the same shot of a doorway me at the max 300mm and him at the max 150mm, When we downloaded the images i had not gained that much more into the image than he did, does this make sense?
