Yes
slightly random question, but I've been wanting to do a personal project on dance for quite a while. Since joining TP I've been much more inspired photographically, so I'm going to actually organise myself to make a start on this project.

I'm planning to phone a shortlist of dance & stage schools that I can get to, and ask if I can photograph rehearsals & classes, aiming mostly at the older students... can anyone tell me what etiquette/law etc says about this sort of photography - do I need model release forms, do I need parents' permission to take photos as well as the school's, do I need to specify where I'll be using the photos (personal portfolio and on here for you lot to critique)?

Also, am I obliged to offer them a copy of the photos? As because I've never done this before, they may not turn out brilliantly...

Thank you :D

You don't need parents permission and i wouldn't have though you need model release.
You're also not obliged at all to offer them a copy of the photos. If they want them, make them pay  Unless of course they state that they will let you in if you give them a copy of the photos or something.

I'm sure someone else on here will give you some better advice though.

If it is a personal project then you won't need model release etc, although if you were to give a copy to the school, they would need one to use the material online etc...but they can obviously sort that :)

Just get ringing, explain what you want to do....perhaps see if they have any dancers who might want some portfolio work shooting :) The opportunities are endless!

Legally I dont believe you need parents permission. However I suspect the school might want to ask for parents approval before you dothe pictures.

Out of courtesy I would actually ask the school to put a note out to parents advising them of the date of the photography so they can ask for their child to be excluded from the pictures if that's their preference. If you do it the right way and offer prints to any parents who specifically like the idea of a pic of their child you shouldn't have any problems.
