Advice from Nikon Users please!!

Hi, I am considering changing brands like many seem to be doing lately. Normally shoot with a Canon 1DS MK ii 16MP and a backup of a 600D. 18MP
I am thinking of changing across to a Nikon 800 or 810 later a backup?
But as I have only used Canon I have not much idea across the Nikon range apart from the fact that there seems to be about a £500 differance on price between the two to start with, both have 36MP
use the same cards. I only shoot land/seascapes (or try to) FPS is not a requirment. Lenses are also going to be needed again for land/seascapes so to start a W/A and a 70-200 zoom are on my list not required to Nikon branded.
A cable release etc etc. Budget to start with around £2000 mark.
As a Nikon shooter what would you start with from a scratch point of view?

The D810 doesn't have an AA filter which is probably the biggest difference. D800E also doesn't and would be a fair bit cheaper. Other differences are pretty minor. The Nikon 24-70 is a very versatile lens you can't go far wrong with if you can only get one lens. You could probably just about get a D800E and 24-70 for around 2k. Alternatively there are a number of lenses with a slower variable aperture but I have no experience with them so can't really point to any in particular.
 
Have you consider the Nikon D750?

Regarding lens, the Tamron versions of both the 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8, are very well regarding, alternatives to the Nikon equivalent. Although, given your requirement, for landscape / seascape, you may wish to go wider, i.e. 16-35, etc.

Ideally, would advice getting a "hands on" with whatever cameras you're considering.

Photograph show is on, at the end of the month, might be worth a visit?

John, Looked at the D750 and alongside the 800's for price there does not seem to be a great margine, I have both Tamron and Sigma lenses for the Canon's and cannot find fault for the cost.
Chris, Thanks for the heads up on a 800E will look into that one.
I have the Sigma 24-70 on the Canon and again cannot fault it except in one part, The weight, feels heavy for it's size.
Would love to get a hands on with some of these cameras but where I live not so easy.

Just a word of caution, regarding the D800 series, which produces 36mp images. You're current pc setup, may be able to handle these, but it would be very annoying to buy one of these to find that you also have to look at upgrading your pc.

I changed from the D800E to the D810 because I was not happy about the D800E's autofocus (too many failures to achieve focus lock on the subject). The D810 uses the D4 autofocus system. Happy with autofocus performance now.
 
No one has mentioned the beautiful WA Nikon 14-24mm. Definitely my fave for many things. Also have the 24-70 and the WA definitely sees loads more action. As a landscaper, it is certainly worth some serious thought.
 
This is probably a daft starting point, but is there a particular reason that you want to change? You seem to have a nice set up and Canon have brought out their own higher resolution camera recently if resolution is the only issue. If you are set on changing however there are a lot of second hand D800s around at the moment which is a great camera. The 810 has better autofocus and the AA filter removed as you probably know, but whether that is noticeable in real life may depend on how big you are going to print and the aperture you are intending to use, with the gains of the removal of the AA filter being set off against diffraction at smaller apertures.

In terms of wider lenses, the Sigma 35mm Art is excellent (though may need fine tuning), as is the Nikon 28mm 1.8 although I appreciate that may not be wide enough. As an alternative the 16-35 or 18-35 can be again picked up relatively cheap second hand (though I have not used them) and you might not even want to write off the Samyang 14mm which I have used and is also very good. You may, on past prices i the classifieds be able to get a d800 and wide lens like the 16-35 for around £1,600 / £1,700 leaving a few quid for accessories like batteries and the like.
 
If you shoot landscape and don't need top end autofocus, have you looked at the D610?

Hi, "is there a particular reason that you want to change?" My main camera the 1DS MK ii is now quite old although has a very low shutter count around 10,000 but it is old tech,No live view,quite heavy and yes only 16MP in comparison to the 36MP of the 800's, don't get me wrong it takes some great images when in the right hands but as the old bones start to ache not so easy to get down to ground level. I see Canon are brining onto the market a couple of crop cameras soon 750 and 760 D's and of course the out of my price range 5Ds and 5Ds R. If I stick with Canon????
 
The D800E should do everything you want & can be picked up reasonably cheap. I guess the D810 would be a slight step up but more expensive.
