Advice needed - Good 'walkabout' lens - Sigma vs. Tamron vs. Canon

Hi all,

This is my first post on these forums. I am a keen landscape/ travel/ architecture photographer, have been doing photography for around 8 years. Updated my gear year before last, so now using a Canon 450D with a 18-55mm 'kit lens', and a Sigma 10-20mm (for landscape photography).

Now I want to upgrade my 18-55mm lens, ideally to something with a bit more range (don't need anything over 100mm), but also to improve the IQ (I know the kit lens is actually OK and can produce some great photos, but I now feel I need something that can provide a bit more - plus the manual focus ring is terrible). I tend to do a lot of outside, daytime photography, but do enjoy taking night shots.

So, I have currently got my options down to:

Sigma 17-70mm OS HSM - Obviously this hasn't been out that long, and therefore not many reviews. Anyone have any experience with it? This has the perfect range, plus benefits from the 'macro' capabilities.

Tamron 17-50mm non-VC - Seems to get great reviews all over the net. BUT this is reducing my focal range (not nessessarily a bad thing), and sacrificing the VC and fast focus, but benefitting from the f2.8 throughout the range.

Canon 17-85mm IS USM - Good range, but not so good reviews online.

Canon 15-85 IS USM - Good reviews, but a lot more expensive than the altenatives.

I don't really want to spend anymore than £400.

Any useful tips?! :)

Sorry for the long post, but I have really been confusing myself over the past few days (and probably reading too much....) :bang:

I have the Sigma 17-70 without OS.
It is a cracking good lens for the price.

Do you really need OS on a 17-70, bearing in mind it costs about £130 extra?

I hadn't considered the non-OS version. Obviously the price difference is a massive bonus.

I presume they are identical (appart from OS & HSM)? And are your photos on flickr taken with it?

I am very happy with my Sigma 10-20mm, so would easily go down the Sigma route again.
