Hello,

I am looking to upgrade from my Sony Cybershot. I want a DSLR but I have a rather limited budget. I was having a look in Jessops and they had what seemed like some good deals which were within my range.

Nikon D40 + AF-S DX 18-55mm lens for £249.
Nikon D60 + AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G Lens for £339.
Sony Alpha A300 + 18-70mm lens for £349.
Sony Alpha A200 + 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens for £289.

What would be your choice? Or is it worth going for a high end digital compact camera rather than a low end DSLR?

I have just seen another post which might help explain things.

But any help would still be helpful. Thanks.

Thanks for anyhelp.

you can get an A200 plus kit 18-70mm for ~£250-255 (e.g. from Amazon).
imo it's very hard to beat at that price point - I certainly would take it over an D40.

You will find out though that the body is only part (& probably the cheaper part) of the story so if you think that you may be limited funds wise in the future but need more range then perhaps a "bridge" type camera may suit you better?

right first off, welcome to TP and there is a sony thread on here for any troubles to get in depth advice. now lets get down to business, i think that if you get the sony a200 it will be a better choice than the a300 as the live view system is hardly ever used, i thought i needed it but i never did and i really regret it because with the money spare i could of got a flash. also you should try and get most of the lenses off ebay as you can get the old minola ones which means you'll get more for your money.

Go for the Nikon, lots of secondhand lenses available at great prices that will work with it.

whats the advantage there, sony also have secondhand minolta lenses and its not like your going to by every lens made. you haven't had no deth of settings or ease of use:shrug:. im not causing an argument but i had the same posts on my "my first slr" thread and it was not useful.

Go for the one thatyou feel most comfortable with in your hands, both ergonopmics and software functions.

All the cameras will take great shots.

Warehouse Express have some great sony offers with 2 lenses at the moment.

Look at them all Nikon Canon Sony Pentax and buy what you like not what others say is good. That suits them not necessarily you.
