Hi can anyone tell me what i am doing wrong or if its the lens im using?
ive got nikon d50 with 18-70 f/3.5-4.5 g ed dx lens.
I was told this lens was ok to take portraits with but no matter what setting i use inc auto they all look like the person is in a fish bowl, big round faces & balloon nose!not good
They appear to be ok if i take the photo from other side of the room but as soon as i get in closer [even without zooming the lens]the pix are awfull.
I have to keep cropping to get what i want & i dont like cropping to much away from the pic.

I have tried every mode setting

Nothing to do with the lens, more to do with how close you are to the person.

The closer you are, the more pronounced the effect will be.

Try using your lens at its 70mm setting and move back so you can fill the frame with the composition you want. It is possible that your room isn't big enough!

Steve.

if you have the lens out at its widest setting (ie 18mm) then it will look like this

you need to use the lens nearer to the 30-50mm+ length for portraits - tradition states that 50mm-85mm is ideal for portraits which is 31mm-53mm on a 1.6 crop sensor

 thanks will have another go at it then.
I was thinking of buying a new lens more suitable for portraits would this be a better option?
What should i be looking for?

The Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 would be a good choice on a crop body, the wide aperture will blur the backgrounds nicely, the Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 is also excellent for portraits but 3x the price of the 50mm which costs around £99 ish

Nah, the 18-70 is in tidy lens, shoot 50-70 and it'll be fine.
you'll have to spend plenty to get a dedicated portrait lens, see how you go on at longer focal lengths and forget about wide angle lengths for portraits.:)

:banana:thanks john, just had a quick few snaps at 50-70 & appears to be ok,if I can get my daughter of her JLS forum I will give it the full tester l8tr:thumbs:

True the 18-70mm is a good lens, what the f/1.8 lenses give you is the opportunity to shoot in lower light without flash

:amstupid: ermmm what is f/1.8 lens etc/
Im new 2 dslr ive only ever had fuji's so am new to all this.
