Advice needed please

I was out taking pics today when what i can only describe as an earwig or simular walked across the end of my lens i went to knock it off but there was nothing there, i was taking pics again when across it walked again, so when i got home i took my lens off over the bath as i though this would be better to see if it fell out, but nothing came out,so then i locked my mirror up and gave it a good blow with the rocket blower but nothing again, has anyone any thoughts on where it might be and could this cause damage, i will also mention that this morning i bought the lens new from wilkinsons a Canon 17-85 is it possible it could be in the lens any help/advice would be appreciated thank you...Ray:)
 
More likely to be a dust mite or small insect in the viewfinder or on the focussing screen (used to be quite common in film cameras).

Anything on or inside the lens will be so OOF that it will not be visible unless it's very it's big and then it would only show as a blurred blob..

Ed it looks about a quarter of an inch long will that be magnifyed a lot and also can it harm my 40D is it best to leave it or get it looked at with a pro:)
 
Shouldn'y really hurt your camera, may be a pain if they get onto your sensor. In film days they used to be killed by placing the film bodies in a plastic bag with some silica gel and placing in a freezer overnight with the batteries removed. I don't know what effect thay would have on a digital body though!

I would suggest contacting Canon support.

in the film days we used to cut up a cat flea collar and put bits in out bag it killed the little mites.
