Advice needed! Repair to a Tamron SP AF 28-75 f/2.8

Hi all,

I recently picked a Tamron SP AF 28-75 f/2.8 (for canon) lens up off the classifieds that had a known error (err 01 appearing when taking pictures). I sent it off to the Tamron centre (Intro2020 in Maidenhead) for repair in the hope it might be a cheap repair - unfortunately it's not - replace diaphragm unit, adjust resolution power, full clean check and test are the things that are needed, with a total price of £213. Given that you can get this lens new for less than £300 this hardly seems worth it to me. So, can anybody recommend any ideas of what to do with it? Anyone know anywhere that might be able to repair it cheaper than this? Or best just to cut my losses and sell on for spares or repair?

Any advice much appreciated!
Cheers

Ouch! That does sound a lot.

I've used Intro 2020 in the past for the repair of one of those lenses (loose internals) and the bill was less than £50.

Can't really say what I'd do in your situation but they turned an already sharp lens into something exceptional, so maybe it's worth it?

Good luck, whatever you decide

Hi Steve,

Thanks very much for the info, good to know if I do go down the intro2020 repair route they'll likely do a good job. At the moment though cash is a little tight, this lens would have pushed forward my move towards full frame, but without it I'm a little reluctant. Decisions decisions, as always!

Unfortunately don't think I can justify the cost of this repair... Anyone know anywhere that might do a repair cheaper, or have any ideas with what to do with it? At the moment I think I'm just going to cut my losses and sell for spares/repair

Sorry, but I don't know anyone else that repairs Tamron lenses. It might be worth having a word in your local camera shop (if you have one). The likes of Jessops (et al) will just send it to Intro 2020 anyway so I wouldn't bother with them.

A quick Google search revealed these:

There was a guy in Wales somewhere but I can't for the life of me remember the details, sorry.

Good luck with your search :)
