Advice needed - Teleconverter or D3000?

Yes
Hi I am thinking of either getting a Teleconverter to fit my D40 with Sigma 70 - 300 or trading in my D40 Body and kit lens for a Nikon D3000 with kit lens. Which would be better?

In that case is getting the D3000 worth it as a step up from the D40? I guess the Sigma would still fit.

This should help you out with Sigma lenses on Nikon's consumer bodies... Sigma

What do you actually want to do? Have a longer lens or newer camera body? If I was to choose one of the new entry level Nikon bodies, it would be the D5000, better camera all round than the D3000

But in any case, putting a TC on a budget lens like the 70-300mm ain't a good idea (that's if it takes a TC). TC's are really designed for the faster pro primes like the 300mm f2.8

Some zooms can handle TC's like the 70-200mm f2.8, but autofocus speed are significantly reduced, plus you lose 1 f-stop of light for a 1.4x TC and 2 for the 2x TC plus image quality.

You might find the auto focus will not work at all unless you pay a lot of cash for the converter. They are crap on consumer lenses. I keep mine in a drawer, best place............

I'm a bit puzzled, is this a purely "what can I spend my money on?" type of question, as otherwise I can't figure out how buying a D3000 would be an alternative to buying a teleconverter
