Advice on a Canon

Hi all.

I am thinking about purchasing a Canon Camera and have been keping an eye on the SH market as this might be the best way forward, to start with.

Would really consider a 40D

Just a couple of Q's.

I note that most times they are offered with a counter value (Shots taken I presume) Do they have a life? Ie. In car values what would denote 'Just run in' - 'Good mileage' - 'High Mileage' - 'Scrap value only'?

Also, do they need regular maintenance? Should they be serviced from time to time and what does this entail/cost?

Thanks in advance.

Actuations Lifespan:

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS / 1000D not disclosed
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi / 450D not disclosed
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / 400D 50,000
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT / 350D 50,000
Canon EOS 50D 100,000
Canon EOS 40D 100,000
Canon EOS 30D 100,000
Canon EOS 20D 50,000
Canon EOS 5D 100,000
Canon EOS 1D Mark III 300,000
Canon EOS 1D Mark II N 200,000
Canon EOS 1DS Mark III 300,000
Canon EOS 1DS Mark II 200,000

Sending it in to Canon every now and a gain for a check up / clean wouldn't hurt

Canon give a figure of 100,000 shutter actuations, just a guide and no guarantee

Mine has done nearly 70,000, but have heard of others needing work after much less, bit like a car, luck of the draw whether you get a good one. Would think that most keep going into the tens of thousands, only get to hear about the ones that don't which are no doubt a small minority

Following on from that don't think you can say what would be the best buy , but certainly not scrap value unless broken beyond economical repair.
Suppose if i were buying another one would be more interested in its overall condition and the price obviously along with original accessories/ extras it came with

Not had mine serviced, just cleaned the sensor when its needed it, never been treated like a studio queen, but looked after properly and kept in a decent bag with a screen protector on the LCD

I do have a spare that has done just shy of 400 clicks, daft really because only ever use the older one, but it can't go on forever or maybe it can?

Thanks for that info you two.

I have heard of Canon srvicing costing £100 or more. Is this anyone elses experience?

Can it be done yourself?

T.T. That list is excellent. it helps me to decide whether to also consider the 550D or not and I would guess, looking at that chart, that it is likely to be rated as 50,000 clicks.

I will be popping into Jessops soon to try the xxD out against the xxxD cameras, for size/feel Etc.

Slight problem trying out a camera in Jessops, the only xxD they do now is the 60D and that is lighter/smaller than the 40D or 50D, controls have changed too

As tijuana taxi said, it is only a guide - I have heard of cameras outliving their estimated lifetime by 2-3x

Further to a point made above, shutter actuation counts are subject to statistical scatter (try saying that rapidly after you've had a few drinks). A count of 100,000 means that most cameras will last aproximately this long, a tiny minority will last twice as long and another tiny minority will fail after 100 shots.
