Advice on camera selection please

I am looking to buy a DSLR. It would be used for general photography with an emphasis on wildlife and landscapes. Image quality is very important but I don’t need (I think) the various effects that some cameras give you. What would be a good base camera that would be worth equipping with ‘better’ lenses?

I originally was going down the PEN route as I am used to Olympus (have on OM1 and OM2 plus digital compact) but they seem to change every few months and don’t have a viewfinder.

Looking at various reports I though about a D5100 - would this be over the top for what I want or would the D3100 suit better.

Any advice appreciated.

welcome to the forum :)
Unless you have a need for some very specific lens (& therefore probably very expensive) you have the choice of any system as there are no bad current production DSLRs.
Go to a shop & play with different bodies from different manufacturers to find which you are most comfortable using. Handling is probably the main difference these days & what suits 1 person may not another.
Unfortunately you are going to find effects in most cameras these days but you don't need to use them!

You tried the search button phil, there is LOADS of answers and "what camera" threads out there.
 
Second hand d90, or d300?

Depends what you are looking for and budget. I say those two cause I like nikon also they both have a drive (to allow older af to work).

If you want the viedo, I think the d90 has it or d300s.

Best thing would be to go to a big camera store and handle all the up to date cameras... Try to get similar lenses on the test bodies so you can see field of view. If they allow it and you have the cards, take some pics and check at home which looks better.
 
Thanks for advice everyone - done a lot of research on here and had a feel in the shop. On balance I decided I did not need the swivel screen on the D5100 and when I saw on the web :)that Jessops were doing the D90 with 18-55VR for £599.95 I was hooked. I know the D90 is not a new model but that don’t make it bad one. I think it will suit me fine as I learn about digital.

Picked it up today, battery is on charge, manual has been put in the smallest room (where I do my serious reading) and can’t wait to get snapping.

Will no doubt be back with lots of newbie questions but thanks for now.
