My boyfriend has a Canon EOS 1000D and I would like to buy him an accessory of some sort as a Christmas present. But, I know nothing about cameras or photography to be honest and was hoping somebody who does know what they are talking about could give me some advice / ideas on where to start looking and what type of thing I could possibly consider?! Sorry to be so clueless…

Thanks in advance!

cheers for the responses!i really am clueless...

he has a wide angle lens and a tripod currently and i think that's it. he likes to take photos of scenery - cityscapes, landscapes. he's new to photography so is still discovering his interest himself really. i think he likes to play around a lot with pictures and camera settings.

budget wise, i would say around £100 but am not very hopeful that i could get much, if anything for that?

The first things that springs to mind are filters.

Square ones are the way to go for a number of reasons, mainly flexibility of use and you can use them on almost all your lenses. An affordable range at the Hi-tech's, i own a couple of cokin's and while being very cheap, they aren't great (they can give the photo a strong colour cast)

Anyway, the way it works is you buy a filter holder: here
And an adapter ring: here The ring attaches the holder to the lens, i've linked you to a 58mm one because that will fit the standard lens that comes with the 1000D, but the idea is, if he has or gets lenses which have a thread larger than 58mm, then you just buy another ring, for £12, rather than a whole new set of filters.
Then you get whatever type of filter you want and slide them into the holder: here
Regarding your choice of filters, the graduated ND kits or a couple of the plain ND's would be good and cokin does a large range of special effects and coloured ones which are fun to play with and might be good for cityscapes.

p.s chaz has made some good suggestions as well

perfect - i remembered last night he had been talking about filters! are all those mentioned above compatible with his camera?

tthanks so much for all the advice!

Well assuming he has the 18-55mm lens that usually comes with the 1000D then yes, as that has a 58mm thread. If you can look in his bag it will be labled on the end of the lens (here is the 1000d with kit lens, the O with a line through it indicates the diameter, in this case 58mm) And you just need the correctly sized adapter ring.

What camera does he own? i also would recommend filters, ive just brought a set yesturday set ok cokin nd grads and there great, you could get him a battery grip, camera bag, i have tamrac expedition 5.

i am definitely set on filters. will have to sneak a look in his camera bag to check lens size etc!

which set of filters should i get for him? over christmas he will have the opportunity to take some nice wintry landscapes where we will be, so are there any i could get that he could put to use and see the effects immediately?

this is such a friendly forum, all the help and advice is really appreciated. and i think i might even be learning something!

actually found out he has the 10 - 22 mm lens. does that make a difference?

Yes It must be the Sigma 10-20mm and this has a 77mmfilter fit also polarizer are not so good due to it being so wide you can use them but it will have a fall of at the edge or one side.
If buying the square type you need the larges size for this lens which will all so fit smaller sizes

Agreed, you'll need the 100mm filters. Something like this would be good.

The Lee filter holder is probably the best option to go with this.

You'll also need an adaptor ring of the correct size for the thread on the lens.

I'd suggest a battery grip, it makes a small camera like the 1000D much nicer to hold for taking portrait orientation shots.

im set on filters but still a bit lost now with his new lens size!
do cokin have an adapter ring etc for this size lens or a filter kit that will work for his lens size?

the filters you ahve linked me too are more expensive than the cokin ones. Can i use the cokin also or do they not do the correct fit? Sorry to have to ask about every single thing!

Maybe i should visit a camera store where someone can physically give me the items i need? Any recommendations of a decent one in London with patient and helpful staff??!

They're more expensive than the ones mentioned earlier because they're bigger. If you use the Cokin "P" size filters with the 10-22 lens, you'll be able to see the filter & holder in the shot when the lens is zoomed out.

If you look at the Cokin ones of the same size (the Z-Pro ones) they will be about the same price.
