Advice on cheapest place in the UK to buy Canon

will have a go , looking to buy brand new to be honest

Ian 'Kerso' Kerr is an independent importer well known and respected around here. He gets stuff new from the US at prices which undercut just about everybody else, with UK warranty. However, I think his cameras are US spec which means they have a US battery charger.

Since you maybe can't use PM yet, email him for a quote kerso1123@msn.com

Just got a 7D form Kerso ..it has the US warranty but UK receipt so if (and it should be a big IF) there are any issues Canon Uk should deal with it... quoted well below current lowest price

What is it then? It was £1150 around six weeks ago.

Another big + for Kerso :)

I don't know how true this is - when there were the issues with the mkIII Canon agreed to make an exception and carry out the fix on imported cameras as well as UK ones. The UK recepit doesn't mean much, the camera is still a grey import and as such Canon would be within their rights to not carry out warranty repairs (I have known this to happen with other manufacturers but don't know anyone who has tested Canon on it). My first Canon was a grey import and when I contacted Canon UK they said they would not deal with any problems and that the camera would have to go back to the US. Perhaps they've changed their stance on this but I'd think at least twice before buying an imported camera (lenses are a different matter as L lenses have an international warranty).

I've sent a camera back in the UK and there were no problems. And even if there were, I'm sure Ian would deal with it directly.

I bought a 70-200 2.8L IS from Ian and it wasn't working right (zoom ring problem). It was quickly sorted - new lens sent out and he dealt with everything at his end!! Ian lives by his reputation and he's the best seller of equipment I know!

Ian is fantastic and I have bought a number of items from him without issue. I bought a lens that needed attention and this was covered by international warranty.

I too, would be concerned about the warranty status for bodies, but I have heard that there isn't a problem. For my own part I have typically bought bodies from Jessops as I think they sometimes use them as loss-leaders and can be very well priced. One local camera store told me that Jessops were selling bodies cheaper than the store could buy them at trade (he even showed me the trade pricelist to confirm this) - Canon alleges that he doesn't buy them any more expensively than Jessops though so either Canon are lying, or Jessops are loss-leading or there is some other marketing incentive to offset the difference!

Lenses, however, are much better priced from Ian.

Try talking to Stuart at Digital Depot. He will supply genuine UK goods and only at a few pounds more. Personally I think that is worth it for a body as they can and do develop faults!!

I tried quite hard recently to find out what the warranty position was with imported stuff (ie not from the official importer) and the conclusion I came to was basically, it's discretionary, and it changes.

However, specifically with Canon, the key consideration is to have a recepit from a UK address. I don't know if this is indicative of having paid UK tax/VAT (which Kerso pays) and that puts them under some kind of obligation, but it's the only documentation they are interested in, not warranty cards.

The other thing is that Kerso told me that a) he has never had any trouble with Canon over warranty issues, and b) he would "always look after TP members" and his rep on here shows he is as good as his word.

From a warranty point of view, buying from Kerso is quite different to, say, a Hong Kong supplier. I have bought from him and no doubt will again.

Perhaps I should clarify that I have dealt with Ian on a few occassions (four lenses and a flash gun so far) and agree that he is a good person to deal with and I am sure I'll deal with him again.

I did speak to Canon a few years ago about warranty issues with imported cameras and they were quite vague about it, but the doubt was enough to put me off. While I don't doubt that Ian would deal with any issue I figure it's easier to buy bodies in the UK to save the hassle if I do have problems.

So if I bought a 500D from Ian it would be labelled as the Rebel ?

I guess it would. Not sure he sells those though, only the top end cameras, which retain the worldwide 7D, 50D etc designations.

I remember that one user from TP had a problem with his Canon body.
Kerso said, that if Canon would make any problems with accepting body for repair, only thing to do would be sending the body back to him and either he would sort it out or send a new camera body back to buyer :)
But he provides an UK invoice so there is no problem with Canon at least.

I thought he sold anything Canon? - If the price is right!

Another big vote for Ian from me.. I bought a Canon body off him a while back and also got the cashback which was on offer at the time from Canon UK
cheers
Chris

Yes I've had a few cashbacks too with kit bought from Ian. Was already saving a few quid and this made the deals even better!

Again, I have also had cashbacks honoured by Canon UK on equipt from Ian.

+ a billion for Ian, great bloke, great prices, great service

the only place I'd ever buy equipment from :)

I have never bought from Kerso to date, but due to his enviable reputation would not hesitate to do so. New kit is always too expensive for me as a hobby shooter and I can usually wait for the cast-offs to be available.

However it always frustrates me why he is so 'underground' about it. It is always the benchmark for lowest 'legit' prices in the uk.

But it's been going on for years, so you must draw your own conclusions.

i walked into my local jessops in Leicester with £1200 cash & walked out with a brand new 7D in my sweaty little paws
