Yes
I recently bought a Jessops flashgun and now want to learn how to use it off-camera. I've found Strobist 101, which looks really interesting, and recommends that I start with the following kit:

* Lightweight light stand
* Umbrella swivel.
* Optical White, Shoot-Through Umbrella

I've had a look on Amazon and Ebay, but am dazzled by the choice and variety in price.

Can anybody recommend a good value-for-money brand / kit off hand for the above items? My budget is not extensive because I'm not sure yet how often I will use it.

Thanks, so you are basically saying cheap is cheerful in this case?

(Except for the umbrella. But I see the point in having the cover as it does add extra options.)

Cheap can be cheerful :)

Those stands are well-regarded by many - they just do a job well.

The Westcott brolly is a good multi-purpose diffuser; with the black cover fitted it creates a good reflective light modifier because of the satin inside on the cover... remove it and you have a shoot-through brolly. Westcott do some good stuff. There will obviously be clones of this out there, possibly cheaper, that will do the same job - I just like Westcott stuff because it's well made.

As for the brolly tilt, I use a Manfrotto one that is very solid and you screw a receiver directly onto, or a Nikon AS-19 foot or similar.

Youll need remote triggers or a ttl cable also if you havnt got one to trigger the flash off camera theres plenty on ebay or amazon i cant post links as im on my phone atm
Thanks I've already ordered some Yongnuo wireless triggers.

I'm going to go for exactly this combination. Will leave feedback on how it works for me.

I have that konig stand, it's plenty for what I use it for (strobist 101 essentially) but it's not going to take the knocks of a heavy user. Plus sides though is that they are dead light and fold up pretty small.

I have the stand and umbrella from specialman's list, both very good for the price

I have a cotswold photo stand - shuts down really compact, the whole kit with he doublefold westcott umbrella is easily transportable.
