Hi, just bought a 50D and 24-105 mm of Kerso, and already have a 100-400, now I am looking to insure this kit against theft, damage etc.. for when I am running about the country (and outside). Are there any insurance companies to be recommended !!!!!! or to be avoided.
Thank you

A few of the popular ones I see mentioned on here are: Aaduki, PhotoGuard, E&L and Glover & Howe. I've heard more bad stuff aout E&L than any of the others and for that reason, I chose to avoid them. People rate the others pretty well. I'm with Glover & Howe but have thankfully not yet had to claim. What I have heard about them is that the claim process was fairly painless.

The prices between the companies varies, but that was not what influenced my decision. I downloaded and carefully read the small print/T&Cs for each of them and decided on that basis. Some companies for example might not cover theft from a hatchback. Others do, provided that the equipment is out of sight. Photoguard I found has quite strict guidelines on home security, so it's worth checking that you meet the requirements.

It's worth mentioning that you may also get cover on your existing home insurance but in my experience the level of cover per individual item wasn't sufficient to cover my gear i.e. it only went up to £600 or so.

Why not buy extra warranty from shop? Well.. unless they dont sell it..;)

Thank you all, will look into the ins. companies suggested by timsandhu

I called up Co-up insurance (my home insurance provider) after purchasing my DSLR and realising my "tech protector" insurance was invalid (total of ALL ITEMS £1000 -- useless).

It appeared I have full accidental damage cover, and single item limit was either 2000 or 2500 I forget which (I had 2500 cover for items out of home).

As it happens I took out 2 UKP pcm accidental damage/warranty cover with currys... although that doesn't cover theft. Better to claim there if covered though (no excess, no impact on insurance premiums) So think I'm sorted

If my household insurer tells true, I have a cheque winging its way to me for the value of a new 24-70 F2.8L

All it took was a phonecall to inform them that my camera gear and metal detectors were over the insured amount and they did the rest. I can go out with around £12k worth of laptops, printers, body's lenses and detectors in the boot of my car and they are all covered.

Specialist insurance isn't always neccessary but it is expensive.

Thank's for the advice kevshore

i got £6000 cover on my equipment away from the house and even in the boot of my car overnight for just £15 extra a year on top of my home contents insurance policy

Do any of the above mentioned insurance companies offer a discount for Talk Photography members?

Glover and Howe.

A very personal approach which is always welcome. Very helpful and understanding, and even accepted me at the age of 15! - I am about to make a claim (cracked 50D LCD screen) so I will see what the claim process is like. She sent me over a claims form and it looks pretty straight forward - always understanding.

- Up to £6000 covered, including computers, printers, and even paper!
- £2M Public Liability Insurance
- In-car Cover
- 20 days cover abroad

£190 per year.

As for a discount, when they ask (Glover and Howe) mention you are signed up to the Canon website/other services and they will discount you a little, so I was told by them.

My household content insurance covers all photo gear anywhere in the UK against all risks at no extra charge. I'm with NOrwich Union - now Aviva

Does household includes accidental damage e.g dropping a lens (it can happen!), or theft from a car ?
