Evening all, a job has come up at my dads school for a 'Media Technician' having never applied for a job like this Iam just after some advice really.

The only area I think I dont fully qualify in is GCSE English as I think they are asking for a C or above(iam not 100% sure) I only got a D.

The position is asking for-
Experience of using various IT software packages
Interest in photography
Good design skills

I believe I can cover all of the above well.

Obversely I need to complete the application form and compile a covering letter. The other thing I may need to get together is some sort of portfolio...but can anyone recommend what I should include in the portfolio? Do you think taking a laptop in and showing my flickr etc will be a good idea or would I need to get an actual ring-binder of sorts with my shots printed?

Would be great to hear from any of your towards this :)

flickr is a free advert ridden place to put your pictures isnt it? sorry dont use it but thats about it yes? i wouldnt even consider turning up at an interview with flickr to show them..

just show a wide range of pictures.. easy enough to print out and the bigger the more impressive

i'd do the ring binder type portfolio for a couple of reasons:

1) it will demonstrate your great design skills
2) it will demonstrate your great photography skills
3) it will demonstrate your great ict software skills
4) it will demonstrate to your prospective employer that they have absolutely nothing to worry about when it comes to your english skills.

as far as the minimum gcse grade goes, don't worry about. do your portfolio as fantastically as you can and apply for it. spend some time on your portfolio, don't rush it - even if you don't get this job you can use it again and again.

i've interviewed quite a few people over the years for various positions, never looked at their gcse grades (enthusiasm and experience wins any day) - the only reason minimum grades are normally put on job adverts is to filter out the various cabbages and duds you inevitability get applying for every single job that appears in the paper.

Grades might not be important, but I would expect to see a good standard of grammar and spelling in any application and associated paperwork.

To be honest I find the standard of English, both written and spoken to be quite appalling these days.
Basic arithmetic is another area that is equally poor and failings in either would cast doubts in my mind over any prospective employee

Ok thanks alot people...

Its quite handy as Ive spoken to the guy thats currently works as the Media Technician and he has given me a few hints on what did included in his portfolio. He said he used quite a few portrait shots, which ive hardly got any off yet.

Iam just working my way through my best work at the moment.

and also, get someone to read through the application....before sending it off.,,sometimes a spellchecker isn't good enough...

Obversely
I think you mean obviously!

I have been known to throw peoples CV's in the bin before where they mention their attention to detail etc but the CV is riddled with errors. :shake:

Good luck with the application and beware of spell checkers, some are less than accurate or even worse use the American spelling, so maybe consult an Oxford English dictionary.

Thanks, I will certainly be getting most of the family to check the application form over, that's for sure.

Can anyone recommend a nice looking portfolio, and a company to print of some of my work?

Can anyone help with the above?

I wouldn't get too tied up or spend a great deal on a portfolio, I'd imagine the "media" skills etc were more important, it does state "an interest in photography" which is a nice plus but wouldn't be the main thrust of the job otherwise it'd be an essential. I'd be more inclined to find out software packages are used, what the role actually entails (media technician could cover a multitude of things), is there anybody you can ask about the role as this would make you look quite keen and shows your interest?? Good luck!

Thanks, point taken. Maybe a few images of before PP and after PP might be a good idea?

If there's a personnel department involved (or Human Resources as I think they're now called), they will almost certainly look at the list of qualifications and may well simply ignore any applicants who lack the minimum requirements. They have also been known to ask to see relevant certificates as proof that the applicant isn't being a little economical with the truth.

www.dscolourlabs.co.uk ?

Ok yeah, I hope they dont just bin my application form as soon as they see that I dont have a C :( Iam going to look at re-taking me English exam at night school.

Hi James, do you have a portfolio online we can look at?

What I would remember is that the people in HR are just people, I'm sure if you followed up your application with a polite phone call checking they received your application and perhaps asking a few well placed questions, he/she will quickly gather that you're English is absolutely fine!

Speaking with someone often makes you stand out and show you're interested/ambitious!

Ive not got an online portfolio at the moment, most of the images iam going print for my portfolio are in my flickr.

Yeah that would help!

Was does online portfolio actually mean? Would you say I would need a website to show my work in some kind of portfolio view?
