Advice on Sigma 10-20mm please.

Having sold on a lot of clutter on ebay, I've treated myself to a Sigma 10-20mm EX HSM as I've decided that landscapes float my photography boat, and it duly arrived today.

It had very good reviews on Amazon, but worryingly, since ordering it I've since read of a lot of issues with Sigma QC and people getting 'bad copies' and having to send them back. I haven't really been able to try the lens out yet because of the bad weather, but could someone tell me if there's an easy test I could do to check to see if mine is a 'good copy'? I'm very new to this game, and I'm not sure if I would be able to tell the difference or not.

I'd be very grateful for any advice.

If you can't tell, is it really that bad? ;)

I wouldn't bother unless your pictures give you cause for concern (and then it might be worth posting them on here for an opinion first).

Most reports I think relate to back or forward focussing - so setting up something with a bit of depth that will show the point where the camera is focussing might be a start. You could try AF and then manual live-view focussing to see if the AF gives OOF on your focal point. You will need to ensure that the detail at the focal point is capable of being recognised and focussed on by the camera.

You could also try taking a picture of a brick wall with the camera absolutely parallel to the wall - and then check towards the edges of the image to see if focus is out on one side.

I've got a Sigma 10-20mm and a 150-500mm and have no problems with them at all.

IMO the Sigma QC issue has been blown out of proportion. A few years ago there was apparently some QC concerns, but going by what you read on the 'net you'd think that there was a 95% failure rate.

As a general rule, I find people will post negative comments and reviews but won't bother giving positive ones. Compared to how many lenses are sold and how many problems there are nowadays I think you'll probably be OK.

Get yourself out and take some pictures with it. Do they look OK to you? If you're unsure, stick the pictures up on here for feedback?

HTH cheers

Been looking at the same lens, would love to see some shots as I also have a D3100:)

Just try it. A squeaky wheel makes the most noise, and there are lots of us with Sigma 10-20mm lenses that are very happy with them. Just remember how much depth of field you have with such a wide lens.. there's almost no reason to go narrower than f/13 on the aperture and if you stay there or wider you're going to get the best from the lens.

I've had four sigma lenses and never any problems with either of them (including a 10-20). I have a few mates with various sigma lenses as well.

the internet in my opinion has deffo blown the 'problem' out of proportion.

well all the professional internet reviews I read steered me to buy the canon efs 10-20
which seems perfect to me

Might find it a bit difficult to fit on the OP's Nikon,:cuckoo:
I have the Sigma 10-20 in Canon and Pentax fit and they are both excellent, I have the f4 - 5.6 version.

i have the canon fit, with no issues, 90% of the photos in my flickr were taken with it

This was taken with the lens this evening, with a little amateurish PP done on it. My poor photography skills aside, would you guys say this lens is performing on par?

Looks good to me, a 100% crop on the lamp in the centre should let you see how good the resolution is.

Am I bad
in my defence the OP doesn't specify nikon fit and I am old

Quality looks really good, I bought myself a wide lens yesterday for my D3100, hopefully the image will be just as good, I opted for a Nikon 12-24 AF-S lens
