Advice please: First ever dSLR shots

Got my first dSLR yesterday and took it out for a spin today. Got a long way to go before I produce images as good as those on here but thought I would share some anyway.

Any advice on where I need to improve will be greatly appreciated! Really stumbling in the dark at the moment.

edit: forgot to say all were taken with a 40d at 250mm f5.6. Dont have a macro lens yet but it is on the list!

Im only a beginner myself and hope I can produce shots as good as those I particularlly like the 3rd one.
Did you get your flies by the way ;)
 
Cheers guys for the positive comments, off to the ganme fair in a minute so hopefully plenty of opportunity to practice some more.

Flies were very graatefully received mate, already trying to figure out a way to tie that varnished wing pattern on a size 16, looks amazing but doubt any of the tiddlers I catch will fit it in their mouths!!
