I'm thinking of buying a secondhand Mac with the following spec.

Powermac G5

2.5 Dual processors
4gb Memory can take 8gb
500gb and 160gb HDD
Airport Wireless
ATI 9800 256meg agp card
OS Leopard installed with Office 2003

It is just the tower unit.

Is the asking price of £220 reasonable/fair and is there anything I should check when I go to view it.

I have always used PC's, so know very little about Macs.

Cheers in advance for any help.

I was going down the same route, looking at second hand Macs... Have you used linux before? as it is very similar to Linux as a whole (Macs being UNIX based) and I think the closest linux flavour would probably be Ubuntu, you can obtain it for free and install it on your current pc and dual boot Windows and Ubuntu on the same hard drive if you had any doubts about moving away from Windows to Mac.

as for the Powermac G5 i think £250 sounds about right, looking at the completed listings on ebay the cheapest one sold for £220 with lower specs that the quoted.

You might want to think twice about getting a G5 Mac. Now that Snow Leopard is out, support for PowerPC processors is dropped, meaning it's now a dead breed. Even if you bought one of the early Intel models you will still be much better set for the future, and it'd probably end up being a faster machine anyway.

Thanks for the input.

I have decided not to buy this machine.

The G5s upto and including the 2ghz processor models are fine and good - ie they're not liquid cooled, and pretty quick too.

If at all possible get a core2duo intel mac of almost any breed - so much more future proof.

Agree with the wise intel words. Don't got ppc route, too out of date.
