Could people give me words of advice on how to make our website look better, instead of looking amateurish... don't want to spend money on templates etc..

thank you in advance

The simple and complicated answer is to learn CSS. :)

First of all - get rid of the Google Ads, then the links page.

The content is fine, with plenty of keywords, although it doesn't really say what you are trying to do with the site.

As above, some CSS would help, but before you start anything like that get a design made for what you want it to look like, then create a wireframe diagram to show all the elements of the design. The design bit is always tricky, especially for someone like me who is a coder rather than a designer, any business sites I do I get someone else to do the design, even if it means paying.

Design is always the hardest part! I do pro web work and have no sense of design, its awful (hence I get graphic designers to help usually)

When I HAVE to do my own work what I always find helpful, is just go through lots of different websites of which you thing has a nice design, or style or colour scheme, then using the parts from each on a bit of paper draw up several designs, making sure you dont completely rip the website off. Its great for inspiration and if its just odd thing here and there, e.g. i like the white bg with navy writing in a serif fonts etc etc.

thank people - will have a look this weekend, depending on the snow

Less is more.

One of my favourite photography portfolio sites: www.thisisvermilion.de

3 tabs: Portfolio - About - contact

That's all you need.

That is exactly how I want my website to be, simple three clicks and you find out all you need to know! But I would like it to look a little more swish though... or is that a contradiction???

I'm thinking of looking into a template I've found - so we will see what happens..
