got this as a christmas pressie today, and on trying it out (family stuff preventing full scale adventure) I've noticed something a bit odd with it, and wanted to know if this is a) the norm or b) a possible problem and it should be sent back asap....

looking through the viewfinder, VR on, Autofocus on, depress the button halfway to focus, and then when taking the pic, the image in the viewfinder jumps

I've not tried it by using the screen to view, and it doesn't seem to do it with the VR off.

any experience of this anyone, or is it a duffer?

thanks

thanks Dave,

I've not downloaded any yet :bonk:

I guess that would be the telling factor

happens EXACTLY to me --- thought it was BIG problem ....
using at 200mm several days ago for bird shots, and had me really worried as I'd bought it used,
images look ok on PC - bit soft as shooting through kitchen window

also told VR should be OFF if using a tripod
then another said turn VR to ON but clamp on tripod should be slackened or the VR will hunt

lets do some tests - handheld and tripod and I'll get back to you in a couple of days

I have the non VR 55-200 so can't comment on that aspect but i've never noticed it on the 18-55 VR. Is it just the 55 - 200 it happens on anyone?

glad to be of help, enjoy the lens.;)

just to add:

I read a lot from Ken Rockwells excellent Nikon review site
with regard to this lens he says.....

"Leave VR on all the time, unless you're on a tripod.
If you're shooting fast action sequences, you may get faster frame rates if you turn it OFF. You don't need VR for fast action; you need VR for marginal light."

he does not comment on the VR "jump" nor on any other VR lens

reviews are "here"...

have a look at his book recommendations
the one by "Brenda Tharp" I just ordered from Amazon UK

It happens on the 18-200 as well - however it's more noticable at longer focal lengths due to the smaller field of view at longer lengths.
