Advice Regarding Canon EOS 450D Options Please

Hi everyone,

I am a fan of Canon products in general and have decided i would like a 450D as my first DSLR.

I am completely new to this type of camera and would welcome your thoughts on whether i should buy a kit which either has the body and two Canon lenses, the EF-S 18-55mm IS f/3.5-5.6, and EF-S 55-250mm IS f/4.0-5.6, the kit with just the smaller lens, or a body and a better spec of lens?

If the body and lens, what lens should i consider please and should i consider versions other than Canon's own range?

Thanks to you both for your replies.

It is a good question and one that i have been pondering which may sound strange! I will use a camera when on holiday and when visiting the coast, woods or just out for walks. I like to photograph things that catch my eye rather than a particular genre. Typically, this is buildings, wildlife, plants and views i like. I also take photographs of family and friends at parties etc but not with any formality.

I hope that this is not too vague...
 
Even though I am a Canon user, I would suggest going to a shop and holding other DSLR's and see what feels comfortable in your hands as they all feel different.
The Canon 450D is a small boday and I don't mean this in a sexist way, it may suit your hands very well.
I've owned a 450D and was very happy with it and I've also owned the Canon 55-250mm IS which is a good lens for the price and this lens will be ideal for a starter into wildlife photography.
Bear in mind though, if you want to shoot small birds without getting too close, ideally you will need to go for a 300-400mm lens.
 
Hi Hashcake, thanks for the advice. No worries on the sexist front, i had a look at a 450D last weekend and actually said i wondered how guys with larger hands found it as i have small hands and it felt comfortable to me!

I am a bit loath to consider other makes as i have always got better images from my compact digital Canon Powershot than my friends get from other makes but perhaps that is just luck...

May i ask if the 55-250mm lens you had was the standard one that is in the kit i have looked at please? I was a little concerned that lenses in a bundle may not be of the best quality just to make the kit attractively purchased. Equally, i do not necessarily want to over invest without due justification. Advise varies from sales person to sales person and i am pleased to have discovered this website where users are happy to share their views based upon experience.

I'd consider buying body only, and a wider range seperate lens to save you swapping. For example, as a walkabout lens I have the Sigma 18-200mm, and I've found it to br excellent. Having the benefit of the same 18mm as the standard kit lens, but the reach of the 200mm (which is enough for what I want to shoot generally), without having to faff about swapping lenses whilst out is just brilliant. If at a track day or other Motorsport event, I'll either keep this lens on, or borrow a longer lens (300mm) from a friend. I also have a Sigma 10-20mm for the really wide angle stuff.

Canon only make one 55-250 IS lens so it will be this one.
The reason it is now offered in kit bundles is because it is a really good lens for the price and there is nothing else on the market to compare it with directly.
Many members here use this lens and it's been a good seller since it was released last year.
As you obviously have your heart set on Canon, as a started package you can't go wrong with the 450D, 18-55mm IS & 55-250mm IS lenses.
One thing worth looking at is the price difference between this and the same bundle with a 500D.
I've had a quick look on warehouse express and the price difference between the two bundles is £70.
Have a look around as see if you can find better deals but for the difference of £70, I would consider going for the 500D.
Later in time you can invest in better lenses it's something I wouldn't worry about for now.

I see Warehouse Express have a Canon weekend coming up and they are only about 60 miles away so perhaps that would be worth a visit to make comparisons.

Hi & Welcome Tracey :wave:

I would definately recommend what you've suggested as your starting off, you won't have any issues selling either of these lenses on should you feel at some time in the future you want to upgrade your kit, plus normally, there is a financial saving buying them as part of a kit. :thumbs:

Canon are also doing their cashback offer as well.
£30 on a 450D and £50 on a 500D.
That cashback would help with the cost of a new bag to carry that new kit around :)
Tracey don't just base the prices on Warehouse express, shop around.
You'll get the cashback deal regardless and you might even save a bit more money,

Thanks for your advice and you are quite correct; the kits do represent a saving over the same items individually. Getting excited now as i know i am not far from placing an order!

I have been surfing around quite extensively for the last week or so and in fact posted on another thread my observation that the retailers increased their prices at the time the cash back launched in mid week. The 450d with both lenses was £620 last weekend and £680 with Camera Box once the promotion launched. :thinking:

That doesn't make sense as the customer gets the cashback directly from Canon.
The retailer doesn't lose a penny on their profit margin.
 
Crikey, thanks for posting details of that thread. I had emailed them and they sent a sharp reply saying the price was correct even though the original was still showing on their listing on Google.

I will add this information to the other thread if it is not there, but they have two sister companies as well; Digital First and The Digital Camera Company.

I bought my Canon 55-250mm IS from Camerabox, the transaction was straight forward and it was delivered the next day.
Since then I have read quite a few threads were people have had a bad experience with them and it has put me off somewhat.
