Being new to this photography malarkey I don't have much kit, infact I hardly have any, just my D60 and kit lens (Until Christmas that is :)).

I received a call last night asking if I wanted to go to Wales on Fri for the final stages of the WRC Rally, Tickets were free, accn was free so of course I said yes.

I will obviously be taking my camera with me and I appreciate I will be pretty limited to what I can achieve but I still want to have a crack at it.

Can anyone offer any advice, bearing in mind my limited kit. on how to get some half decent photographs?

What size is the kit lens? What stages are you planning on heading into?

Friday, all 4 venues will be busy. Hafren being the first stage, alot are going into Myherin for the Pikes Peak section or the water splash and Sweet Lamb will obviously busy as you'll see the cars for about 1 minute, the same with Walters Arena. All stages being run twice. You would probably have more joy in Myherin or Hafren as they are expecting Sweet Lamb to be very busy so will be drowned with marshals.

Saturdays stages take your pick, all general forestry with no 'man made' spectator areas, so should be easier to get some pics, although usually quite limited in Halfway. You won't get anything really at the Millenium stadium on Saturday, even the media struggle.

Sunday, Port Talbot jump is a long walk, rest of the stage isn't that exciting, so Rheola is probably a better option.

Unfortunately I just have the 18-55mm VR lens.

We are traveling down Friday night and spending all day Saturday

Edit: A mate has just offered to loan me his 18-200VR lens :-)

No idea. The bloke who is taking me has been going to the event for years sometimes as a Marshall and is a very keen amateur rally co-driver who has his own car. I have totally put my trust in his judgement.

Only things to be aware of this weekend then are.

There is a hell of a lot of snow in the stages, so keep an eye on your WB, early morning will probably be difficult, lifting fog, dull light or low sun and snow. Anything else to confuse a DSLR????

Best of luck, experiment on the course cars and then you'll be ready for the first competitive car.

I'm also a keen photographer, heading the rally for Saturday.

I've never been to a rally before, so don't really know how it works. Whats it like in terms of moving between stages? I think I read you can't move between Halfway and Crychan, but is it worth trying to get between either of those and Resolfen, if so, is it possible to do it for consecutive stages?

I have 2 lenses I'm taking, a 28-80mm and a 70-300mm, so I should be ok across the board, as long as I can push my shutter speed high enough without underexposing.

Don't really know what to expect, but I'm certainly looking forward to it!
