Advice wanted - Canon DSLR

Hello!

I am considering buying another DSLR. I am currently considering a 20d, 30d, 40d, or a 450d.

I have a budget of around £550 all in.

I have owned a 20d in the past, and loved it. I am not sure how I should break down my spending!

So, I have some options:

20d body - about £200.
30d body - about £270.
40d body - about £380.

Lens wise, I would like the following:

50mm prime - about £75.
55-250? or 50-200 or something. I had an EF-s 55-250IS before, and liked it. I can get one of these for about £150 or so.
and something like an 18-55? I dont know if there are any options within budget that are a bit better than a 18-55IS lens?

Should I consider anything else? a 17-85IS? or?

I will be taking photo's of general things really, from wildlife, to motorsport, to football.

However, I will mostly be taking photo's of my 5 week old baby son. :love:

So, I would value your opinions?

Think I would go for a 40D, 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS, careful shopping on here should just about get you within budget
Don't forget some memory cards though and a bag to put it all in
 
I'm happy with my Canon 17-55mm, but going to be very hard for the OP to do all he wants for the money if he spends 250 quid on one lens like the Tamron 17-50
(heard its a good'un though especially the non VC model)

Hope that didn't sound stroppy, wasn't meant to :)
 
I would say the nifty fifty should be the first lens bought if the majority of pictures are going to be baby shots. Followed by the 18-55 and then the 55-250 when budget allows. 40D would be the body to go for. The Tamron 17-50 is a big step up but so is the price.
 
On second thoughts reckon you are right there Colin, was just trying to give him the most versatility although I do agree the nifty would be better for the baby shots
 
I have a 20D and I love it but I have to be honest and say that it's a piece of consumer electronics and although I do know that a shutter can fail at any time it might be worth realising that some 20D's at least must have passed their shutter rating by now. So, I think that buying new is always the best option (IMVHO) but if not wishing to buy new maybe going for something newer might be better.

BTW, the Tamrom 17-50mm f2.8 is a lovely thing.

I would just go out and get a new 500D body and a new 50mm F1.8, you can get both + a memory card for just under £550 at present.
