Hi Folks
Fortunately I will be going to a venue in one of the arenas, unfortunatly, I will be up in the gods but would like to take pictures and would like some advice.
I have a Canon dslr 1000d with it's kit lens 18:55mm plus a 55:250mm. Please can you advice which lens and mode, would be best suited along with speed and aperture settings etc? if they were applicable? to get some reasonable results.
Many thanks.
Machiner.

Some details on what you'll be shooting - a band, a sport, a flea circus - would be useful for advice on lens, etc.

I'd also advise you check the situation on photography, it might be that DSLRs aren't allowed and you might be refused entry if they are doing searches on entry.

Sitting in the gods at a flea circus? come on. sorry to have bothered you.

Any indoor photography at an event like that is going to give you problems because of the poor lighting. I assume you won't be able to use a tripod, so you're probably going to need to be working at your highest possible ISO settings, and widest acceptable aperture. You will be doing well to get your shutter speed to 1/60th. I would be shooting in Shutter Priority mode to try and ensure the sharpness.

Assuming you're watching some kind of stage show, you will probably want your 55-250mm lens, but bear in mind that you will probably be using it at its extremities - so don't expect perfect shots. I wrote a guide to Sports Photography on my blog not so long ago - some of my general points in there would also apply to event photography like this, so have a browse if you'd like.

Photography is quite often banned at venues. You might get away with a phone camera, but I'd expect to be challenged with a dslr and a long lens.
