Advise on lens to buy for next weekend?

Hi

A friend of mine has asked me to do some shots of his restaurant for his new website next weekend.

Can anyone recommend a lens to use?

How wide should I go?

should I go fixed of zoom?

I was thinking 17 - 40

The cost isnt too much an issue, I have had a 24 -70 but I was thinking I might need to go wider to try to make the restaurant look big ??
I just dont know how wide I can go with the lens before the shot looks funny..

Wide angle isnt my thing..

What camera are you using? 24 is pretty wide on a full frame, so you probably won't need to go wider if you don't like wide angle.

Making it look bigger isn't just how wide you go, the height you shoot at will affect that also.

You could do a pano for extra width too remember. I would make sure I took some detail shots too. Table setting with wine etc on the table. And any features like the bar or kitchen serving area. A shot of the chef putting the plates there for pick up etc. Is good if they are present. Waiter serving a couple at the table.Best to have details with a couple wider shots to tie it all together.

Are you using lighting? That is going to be a bigger concern imo unless you shoot the scene without people and bracket exposures, then you can blend them in post or do hdr depending on the look he wants.

To help your decision, why not do a 'try before you buy' and hire a couple of lenses for it?

You might have heard of www.lensesforhire.co.uk - the service is, quite frankly, superb. I'm sure that pretty much every forum user here will back me up on that! (well, those that have used them before :thumbs:)
 
If the premises is square i'd go for wide 12mm if longish galley around 18mm or longer ? i suppose it depends on the detail of the restaurant and it's good features.
 
Have you been there ? Have you tried the lenses that you already have ?
A "reccy" visit is always time well spent.

Why? What gave your friend the idea you could shoot interiors? Your website is full of baby pics! Why not keep a friend and ask him to get a pro photographer in? Seriously.
 
Its a bit short notice to practice with it but the ideal for interiors on a 5D would be to hire a 24mm TS-E
