So after my recent brush with the AE-L AE-F button (See thread 'Lens problem any ideas) I am not quite sure what this button does... Anyone be kind enough to point me in the right direction please? Thanks.

It locks the exposure or focus that the camera sets when you partially depress the shutter release button (thereby allowing you to recompose and shoot without altering focus or metering).
Some Nikons permit this button to be programmed to work in various ways, but that is the default.

Kev, your D90 does not have a dedicated AF-ON button so you will need to go into the menu and assign that function to the AE/AF lock button if that is what you want.

Nikon manuals tell you how to do everything, but not why you may want to do them. A good book that goes into that sort of detail is money well spent.

Thanks. Have been watching a few videos on YouTube. Now just need to make some time to play.. :-)
