Aerial Photography equipments!

I don't have great experience but lens choice and more importantly, how you deal with shooting through the glass, or more probably perspex, will be key to good results. I have some shots on my Flickr if you fancy a look at what I managed with my D90 and 18-105. The perspex unfortunately had some blemishes which caused some blur on some shots. It took a fair bit of PP to get them to this point as colour and contrast were quite poor.. HTH

What will you be shooting from (helicpoter, balloon, plane?). Is this just some sort of tourist helicopter flight type thing or are you doing a specific shoot. Depending on what you're shooting from the advice will be different :)

@ Doog: thank you for your info, i checked your Flickr,i liked the the birds motion photos, specially "Starlings in the bath tub" ! bird photography is one of my favorites. actually i started this thread for getting some info from those who experienced photography or video photography with remote helicopters.
i didn't find the mentioned photo in your Flickr, what are the subjects?

Ah I see, my comments were in regards to shooting from a small plane through the perspex window.

This is the kind of shot I was talking about

Probably not the kind of thing your looking at shooting though. Good luck with your search for info, and thanks for the comments on my bird pics.(y)

I got some information and i'm keep looking for others experience, thanks for your pics, i like the Marina one.

take a look at copterworks.com in the states for rc helicopters set up with camera rigs.

heres one example of that type of equipment in use: http://vimeo.com/13774420

not cheap though! looking at around $15k for the kit (excl. camera).

Sophie, I use an elevated mast system for low level aerial photography, but know several guys who used unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV's) for this as well. As has been said they aren't cheap and at least two of my friends paid over £20K for their systems.

You can open the window on a light aircraft so no Perspex problem

i am not sure about your friends used system but i'm focusing on RC helicopter. i got some info and i will share if anyone was interested in...

What is the license requirements for a system such at the RC Airship....HF transmission and 7-10 channel anti jam control systems...Maybe something to look at ...

Only done it a couple of times myself so i'm no expert. Just make sure you give the windows a good clean before you go up and take a CPL.

Next time I go up, I plan to get round the shooting through glass/perspex issue by taking the doors off. :D

There's probably a stack of CAA/Ofcom regulations governing the use of RC aircraft (airships or helicopters). For instance, the CAA's CAP 722 document (a mere 96 pages!) contains info on 'Small Unmanned Aircraft' operation, the assignment of radio frequencies, and a stack of rules like this one:

5.1 UAS pilots and commanders intending to use radiotelephony must ensure that they hold a Flight Radio Telephony Operators’ Licence (FRTOL) valid for the privileges intended to be exercised. (UAS = Unmanned Aircraft System)

Methinks it's easier to phone them up than to wade though this lot  - http://caa.searchimprove.com/search...sw=radio+control&group=274618655&swtype=exact

There are some rigs on here and if you go through the specialist section of the site theres a lot of info on other equipment for using R/C heli platforms including groundstations etc.

Most seem to use multicopters now days instead of using large single blade nitro helis just incase of engine failure and also more stable.

Theres loads of info on youtube aswell of single and multi systems using anything from HD Go Pro cams up to Canon 7D and 5D MKII's here is a link to someone using a 7D.

I currently use a 50ft portable mast but have also been looking into the RC heli option with a cradle for a DSLR or high end P&S. Would love to read any info you have though (y)
