AF-I or AF-D

AF-I is the first version of AF-S

The lenses are generally much bigger than AF-S (build quality) but with stellar optics.

AF-S and AF-I are totally compatible and if you want to use Nikkor TC's you are better of with AF-I or AF-S, rather than AF-D.
 
Thanks mate. Just looking to replace the 300 f4, would like a 400 f2.8 or 500 f4 but due to costs im going to have to save and when i saw the 300 f2.8 both in AF-I and AF-D for sale it would let me get a better lens now and still help save towards the lens i really want. What the AF-I like for focus speed? and is the AF-D similar focus speed to my 300 f4 AF-D.
 
As a rule of thumb an AF-I version of a 300mm will focus faster than an AF-D.

AF-D focus speed is body defendant though - on older Pro class D1 bodies you'll find the AF-D very quick, on lower end bodies ie D200, D300 then the AF-I will be quicker.

I have shot with a 300mm AF-I, its really huge. Optically its amazing.

If considering an AF-I lens I'd make sure the motor is in good order, as trying to get one repaired will cost a fortune.
