After a new lens... Super Zoom Lens ?

Well after my last holiday i took my beloved Canon 17-85 IS and my Canon 90-300. I have had some fantastic pictures from both of these lenses, however a problem i encountered with a two lens solution was that the 17-85 fell short sometimes and changing over lenses mid way though normally lost me the shot, so i am thinking... why not get a super zoom?

I went on a cruise and one thing i noticed was that 80% of people who had a Canon 500 or 550d seemed to have the 18-200mm attached to it. So my question is what should i get?

The choices are:

Canon 18-200 - Seems like a contender

Tamron 18-270 - Awesome range

Sigma 18-250 - Hummzzzzz

All of these lenses have image stabilisation, and that is something that i do not want to be without. Ideally i would like something that is the same quality as my 17-85 or better, so im leaning towards the Canon at the moment as some of the reviews seem to suggest that the canon is the best for IQ, however both the Sigma and the Tamron have a little extra reach.

If anyone has any samples please could you email them to me as i would love to see IQ on them.

What about the Canon 55-250mm IS?
Cheap as chips and very sharp for the money.
If i recall i did very little PP on these.

I would, but i think i miss the wide end, so thats why i would like 18mm
 
Used to have the Tamron 18-270mm. Not a bad lens IQ wise but i found it far to slow to focus. Unless I was in broad daylight it would take seconds to lock focus....drove me nuts! I got shot of it and went back to two smaller range zooms......MUCH better in my humble opinion.

The 17-85mm is useful, but it's not great and matching or exceeding its performance shouldn't be very hard; but I'm not sure any of these extreme zooms will really do it. The 17- 85mm has a range of x5, which is about as much as I would feel comfortable with (less is usually better) and the 18-200 is about x 11.

OTOH, the Canon lens gets reasonable reviews for what it is - a travel and general purpose lens that performs quite well within its limitations, with a few drawbacks. I'd rather have a two lens solution, or two bodies with the lenses attached, but that's me. You might want to look here http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/canon_18-200_3p5-5p6_is_c16/page4.asp .

The main reason i want this is for when i go on holidays and if i go for a general walk about somewhere. If i know im going to be going somewhere nice then i will try to use my Sigma as as much as poss.

Advice is appreciated.
 
Hi I had the 18-200 and the range was useful, I just felt it lacked real quality at the long end. I didn't feel it gave great quality for the price tag. Mind you if you could get a 2nd user one it might not seem so dear for the quality of pictures at the long end.

how much did you pay for the 18-200 ? How much are they second hand generally?
 
I got mine new with a 50d, I sold it recently fir £275 I think. I also tried a siggy 28-300 and that was very soft at the top end.

I guess with so much range there is bound to be a trade off in quality.
